cleanAIRE NC is Hiring a Community Engagement Coordinator Near Charlotte, NC

Note: This is a 40-hour/week contract-to-hire position after an initial three-month contract period, and if both parties agree, full-time employment will be offered.

CleanAIRE NC (CANC) is a statewide nonprofit organization working for cleaner air and solutions to climate change since 2003. With offices in Charlotte and the Triangle, CANC is driven by its mission:

To advocate for the health of all North Carolinians by pursuing equitable and collaborative solutions that address climate change and air pollution.

POSITION

CleanAIRE NC (CANC) is seeking an individual to serve as the Community Engagement Coordinator for a high-energy, fast-paced team. The Community Engagement Coordinator will assist the team with all aspects of CANC’s programmatic work and outreach within environmentally impacted communities in Charlotte, and potentially across the state.

Reporting to the Environmental Justice (EJ) Program Manager with a dotted line reporting to the Community Science Manager, the Community Engagement Coordinator will assist with planning and support for CANC’s community engagement, outreach opportunities, and event support for community listening sessions, meetings, climate/air monitoring events, educational trainings and/or workshops

This person should have enthusiasm for and the ability to communicate CANC’s mission and programs with tact, sincerity, persuasion, and passion. Steeped with lived experience and history, the ideal candidate will have firsthand experience working with EJ communities.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Grant & Program Administrative Support

  • Work collaboratively with staff to develop and implement strategies to advance CANCs mission.
  • Assist the Executive Director in managing priorities of all programmatic work.
  • Attend relevant community and government meetings and draft summarizing outcomes.
  • Evaluate progress towards programmatic goals and update project and program status reports.
  • Contribute to preparing reports that are presented to the Board of Directors and senior staff.
  • Assist in tracking the due dates of grant reports and proposals.
  • Support the team in researching new programmatic grant opportunities. 

Community Engagement Coordination

  • Represent CANC at neighborhood and community meetings, give presentations, and work with stakeholders to implement our programs.
  • Assist in the execution of (and in some cases lead) neighborhood-based meetings.
  • Represent CANC at various tabling events and assume responsibility for ensuring we always have sufficient marketing materials: brochures, stickers, event/program flyers, etc.

Volunteer Coordination

  • Manage the recruiting, training, and scheduling of volunteers to assist with program work and events.
  • Coordinate volunteers and communicate their tasks for each event/project.
  • Keep accurate and up-to-date records of volunteers in the organization’s CRM.
  • Manage CANC accounts on various volunteer recruitment sites (Hands On Charlotte, Share Charlotte, etc.) and update volunteer listings as needed.

Event Coordination

  • Manage event coordination for community outreach events. This includes communicating with community partners, scheduling and communicating with volunteers, ensuring events are adequately promoted, and coordinating setup and supplies.
  • Coordinate speaker(s) and all outreach related to program events.
  • Serve as primary contact for all aspects of event coordination.

EXPERIENCE

This is an entry-level position. Minimum of 1-2 years experience is preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of (or ability to rapidly learn) and passion for [mission-related duties] policy, and nonprofit organizations.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication excellence, including translating complex ideas into clear, compelling text without grammatical and punctuation errors.
  • Experience in community engagement and partnership-building.
  • Ability to facilitate meetings, listening sessions, and town hall meetings, while capturing outputs, actions, and next steps.
  • Commitment to supporting diversity and inclusion as CANC works to advance social equity.
  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Experience using online services and other data sources to conduct research.
  • Proficiency in using spreadsheets; MS Office, and Google Productivity Suite.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, including setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong logistical and database skills.
  • Commitment to the mission of CANC.

WORK ENVIRONMENT, SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION

  • This is a 40-hour/week contract-to-hire position after an initial three-month contract period, and if both parties agree, full-time employment will be offered.
  • Salary is commensurate with experience in the Charlotte region.
  • CANC supports a flexible work schedule and prioritizes work-life balance.
  • Flexible schedule allows staff to work from home and at the CleanAIRE NC Charlotte office located at 933 Louise Avenue.
  • In-town travel will be required.
  • This position may require occasional evening, weekend work, and overnight travel to participate in community events and meetings.
  • A high volume of public contact is expected.

Must be able to endure some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as office equipment and boxes of supplies. The work may require specific but common physical characteristics and abilities, such as lifting up to 50 pounds, above-average agility, and dexterity.
