About the Position:

As the Director of Development, you will work with Civic’s Chief Operating Officer and CEO to lead fundraising for operating and capital requirements. This role will manage fundraising for approximately $2MM in operating funding annually as well as multi-million dollar capital campaigns for the Lending and Real Estate Development programs. 

Civic is currently seeking a highly motivated, experienced, and dynamic individual to serve as the Director of Development. The primary responsibility of this position will be to cultivate and grow Civic’s fundraising relationships with institutional and individual funders in order to keep pace with the expanding budget and ensure that adequate funds are available to carry out the mission of the organization and expand impact. 

The successful candidate will be entrepreneurial, creative and energetic, continually seeking out new opportunities and connections for growth. The position requires strong relationship-building and communication skills coupled with a strategic approach to fundraising. The candidate must be able to skillfully represent the organization to donors, prospects, and the broader public.

Responsibilities:

  • Re-envision and redefine Civic’s development strategy, with a focus on expanding the network of resources committed to Civic’s mission. Consider the variety of philanthropic sources available to Civic, including federal grant opportunities, institutional organizations, individual donors, and corporations. 
  • Mobilize, support and coach Civic’s Board of Directors to fundraise for the organization and support recruitment of future Board members.
  • Develop a keen understanding of Civic’s unique business model and source mission-aligned investment opportunities
  • In collaboration with the team, reach annual operating fundraising goals via stewardship of existing relationships and development of new relationships.
  • Collaborate with departments across the organization to understand the variety of projects that require funding, and develop compelling fundraising campaigns to meet those needs. 
  • Organize cultivation events to engage stakeholders and elevate Civic’s brand, such as introductory meetings, school building tours, fundraising pitches, fundraising events and more.
  • Become an outward facing presence and brand ambassador for the organization.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to development colleagues including oversight of recurring grant reporting and applications, prospect research, and funder communications. Responsible for fostering professional growth to optimize team performance.

Qualifications:

  • 7 years of lead fundraising experience
  • Familiarity with NYC and national education fundraising environment is a requirement, knowledge and experience within the education reform sector is preferred.
  • Passion for Civic's mission to support high-quality education options for under-resourced communities is a must. 
  • Evidence of ongoing experience being the lead fundraiser for multi-million dollar campaigns. 
  • Strong relationship building capabilities with the desire to be out in the philanthropic community forging new relationships and promoting Civic’s work.
  • Capacity to absorb complex information and distill clear and compelling presentations or grant applications for non-expert audiences. 
  • Excellent communications skills across various mediums, including interpersonal communications, presentations, Powerpoint, and grant writing. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders, both internal leadership and external stakeholders, while also leading projects and relationships independently.

Work Environment, Compensation and Benefits:

  • Civic is located in New York, NY and has a hybrid/remote, collaborative work environment. Local NYC team members work two days on-site weekly and telework the rest of the week. The entire organization also meets quarterly for a week in NYC. This position will require monthly, in office time if the candidate is not local to the NYC region.
  • The salary range for this role is $130,000 - $150,000 commensurate with experience.
