The Opportunity

The Center for Employment Opportunities is seeking a Custodian responsible for ensuring the overall cleanliness of the CEO office in New York City and maintaining a comfortable environment for colleagues and visitors at all times throughout our office space.

This position will report to the Manager of Office Administration.

Who We Are

The Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) provides employment services to people recently released from incarceration. Across the United States, 8,000-9,000 people participate in CEO each year, transitioning to employment that supports themselves, their families, and their communities.

What began as a demonstration project of the Vera Institute of Justice in the 1970s to address employment barriers facing the formerly incarcerated following release in New York City has grown into the leading reentry employment organization in the country, where over 30,000 formerly incarcerated individuals have secured full-time employment since 1996

Who You Are

  • You come to CEO with 2-3 years or more of related experience
  • You're able to consistently lift and move objects up to 40-50 pounds with a cart; stand, kneel, bend, and climb to complete projects
  • You’re adaptable, able to adjust course as needed and as requested
  • You’re well organized with the ability to prioritize your responsibilities 
  • You’ve demonstrated the ability to identify and anticipate challenges and suggest potential solutions/seek assistance to identify solutions
  • You’re able to consistently meet deadlines and expectations
  • You have general knowledge of cleaning terms and safety procedures related to the handling of cleaning chemicals, supplies, and equipment
  • OSHA certificate is a plus but not required

The Nitty Gritty

Key responsibilities of the Custodian include but are not limited to:

Office Cleanliness

  • Ensures that the reception area, hallways, kitchen areas, classrooms and conference rooms are clean, swept, mopped and sanitized daily.
  • Ensures all lighting fixtures throughout CEO space are in working condition at all times. Replace the light bulb when needed.
  • Clean and sanitize all door knobs and conference room equipment (mouse, keyboards, tables and furniture) daily.
  • Ensures that the Mindy Space (eating area), kitchen areas, sinks, countertops, coffee machines, microwaves and appliances on all 3 floors (16th, 17th & 18th floors) are clean.
  • Performs thorough cleaning of refrigerators on all 3 floors; disposing of old items and sanitizing refrigerator’s compartments, upon direction of the Manager of Office Administration.
  • Vacuums and dusts common areas including stairway on Fridays and vacuums private offices upon direction of Manager of Office Administration.
  • Adheres to building policies on disposal of garbage and recycle items daily.

Supply Support

  • Ensures office printers are clean and well stocked with copy paper.
  • Maintains kitchen and lounge areas so that they are always stocked with coffees, teas, sugar, creamer, paper cups, utensils, napkins, paper towels, and dish/hand soaps
  • Distributes and replenishes kitchen supplies and condiments to all floors as needed
  • Maintain inventory of all office cleaning supplies. Organize and restock closet with shipment received.
  • Submit to manager cleaning supplies reorder list.
  • Visits hardware store for office needs upon manager’s request.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Report to the Manager right away, any office emergency situation.
  • Reports to Manager all office repair needed (water leak, faucet malfunction, toilet backed-up, emergency/regular ballast repair/replacement, broken furniture, coffee/water machines malfunction, etc…).
  • Distributes shipments to appropriate parties
  • Performs other job-related duties and responsibilities that will be assigned from time to time

Compensation and Benefits

The salary for this position is $18.14. In an effort to be both equitable and transparent, CEO's compensation philosophy considers a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, experience, internal equity, and home office location in making a final determination on our salary offer.
