Description

This position is located at our Lloyd Corporate Plaza building in NE Portland, Kerns area. The schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 

The Billing Specialist I is responsible for inputting data from various source documents into the computer system for storage, processing and data management purposes within a timely and accurate manner. The Billing Specialist is responsible for billing clients and insurance companies and adjudicating accounts in a timely manner.

All incumbents must understand, appreciate and respect the diversity and cultural differences within our Cascadia community. As Cascadia is Trauma informed, the incumbent must support a Trauma Informed Care Environment. With the high prevalence of trauma among individuals receiving behavioral health services, it is required that the incumbent understand the effects of trauma on health, coping, and other aspects of the lives of those we serve.

On the first of the month, following 60 days of employment, benefit eligible employees (20/hrs. or more per week) are able to enjoy affordable, low cost, medical, dental, and vision benefits. Essential Duties:

  • Operate keyboard or other data entry device to enter events/payments data into computer in a timely manner. Enter alphabetic, numeric or symbolic data from source documents into computer, using data entry device and following format displayed on screen.
  • Review, correct, delete, or reenter data to ensure entered account data integrity; combine information from data systems when account information is incomplete; purge files to eliminate duplication of data.
  • Make changes/adjustments when needed, obtain further information for incomplete documents, review forms for accuracy and make amends when necessary.
  • Provide general clerical support as needed. Prepare routine correspondence.
  • Prepare, edit, distribute, and/or correct specialized and/or complex documents.
  • Verify EHR system and MMIS for eligibility for programs as assigned.
  • Enter coverage and claim activity in the billing system when necessary.
  • Make changes/adjustments to client accounts as needed, with appropriate documentation.
  • Process payer/insurance denials on a timely basis, with appropriate documentation and follow-up.
  • Attend meetings and trainings as necessary.
  • Audit/adjudicate client accounts while processing claim denials, data entry errors, refunds, as well as payer recoupments.
  • Maintain duties, work flow, references, changes, and up-to-date documentation as required, associated with billing, and/or other activities.
  • Maintain expected quota/production.
  • Participate in all scheduled staff meetings, supervision sessions, and other departmental and agency meetings.
  • Complete annual employee training requirements on a timely basis
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Medical billing experience is preferred through course work completion or three to six months of relevant work experience
  • Knowledge of insurance companies’ rules and regulations (PPO, HMO, Medicare and Medicaid and Commercial)
  • Knowledge of the health insurance industry, specifically behavioral health, preferred.
  • Data entry skills, 10-key by touch, and keyboarding 65wpm
  • Ability to operate office equipment such as photocopier, fax machine, printer, and calculator
  • Ability to operate computer to access email, electronic calendars, and other basic office support software
  • Ability to prepare reports

Working Conditions:

  • Environmental: Work is performed at the Administration location in an office environment. Team environment with cubicles may create light noise distractions. The work hours are expected to be performed during business hours Monday through Friday. This position may require occasional long hours to meet deadlines. Daily routines may be hectic and may require the Billing Specialist to perform the tasks of other employees if the need arises. Meal periods and breaks are subject to interruption.
  • Mental Demands: Multi-tasking with interruptions is required. Deadlines are to be met each month and in some situations may be weekly. There will be need to adapt to change.
  • Physical Demands: The Billing Specialist position requires prolonged periods of sitting and computer work.
