Capital Metro is Hiring a Director, Public Affairs Near Austin, TX

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
The Director, Public Affairs reports directly to the EVP, Chief Experience and Engagement Officer. This position is responsible for creating cohesive messaging, ensuring that external messaging is reflected internally and shared with the workforce, coordinating closely with the Director of Community Engagement to co-develop meaningful and authentic community opportunities, and leading creative content development that elevates the CapMetro brand in the Central Texas region.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
Note: The duties and primary responsibilities below are intended to describe the general content of and requirements of this job and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.
  • Lead and develop the Public Affairs team, consisting of four direct reports and 11 team members.
  • Provide strategic and tactical management of planning, activation, and tracking of integrated communication plans used to guide messages in all internal channels and external channels, including news media relations, social media, and executive presentations.
  • Partner with the Austin Transit Partnership’s Chief Communications Officer to ensure continuity on Project Connect's message and community relationship strategy between the two agencies, which includes leading a Project Connect project-specific communications support team.
  • Provide counsel to the President and CEO and executive staff on operational and policy matters.
  • Supervise the communication, multimedia content development, and project-specific support teams as well as manage the associated budgets.
  • Perform media relations and writing as required.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for the redevelopment and ongoing management and governance of key digital assets for public affairs content, such as agency Web pages, social media platforms and the agency’s online digital newsroom.
  • Represent the division EVP and the agency as needed, internally and externally.
  • Compliance with records management standards and company policy.
  • Responsible for ensuring departmental compliance with the agency's Emergency Response Plan.
  • Support CapMetro’s Safety Management Systems (SMS) process by following safety and security policies, considering safety in every action and reporting safety and security concerns.
  • Perform other duties as required and/or assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES - SUPERVISOR AND/OR LEADERSHIP EXERCISED:
Manage department personnel by planning, scheduling, delegating and overseeing employee work assignments, authorizing, coordinating, and scheduling work with vendors and consultants, conducting personnel actions, including, hiring and interviewing, and overseeing hiring, training, work assignments, and performance evaluations. Will supervise two different functional areas that include communication and creative content development.
WHAT YOU BRING
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or related field. Related experience may substitute for educational requirements on a year for year basis for up to four years.
  • Seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in public relations, marketing or brand development including three (3) years of supervisory/lead experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Skills, knowledge and understanding of marketing and branding principles, public relations, research and planning techniques and philosophy.
  • Technical proficiency with computer hardware and software, including desktop publishing, word processing, data management and scanning software and website technology.
  • Proficiency in Windows and Mac environments. Proficiency in publishing content on the leading social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. Understanding of Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience building rapport, establishing credibility to engage and influence stakeholders and constituents at all levels, internally and externally; astute, seasoned leader, business partner, and stakeholder relationship manager. Experience presenting to all levels of an organization.
  • Office and time management skills: ability to direct the assignment, training, supervision and evaluation of staff and their work.
  • Extensive organizational experience: ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and supervise an integrated and cooperative Marcom plan.
  • Ability to work independently, establish, and maintain effective relationships with the public, media and CapMetro staff.
  • Ability and experience with managing budgets, outside vendors, and reporting on major initiatives.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
