What’s it like to be a Baltimore police officer?As a uniformed Baltimore Police Officer, you’ll patrol a neighborhood by vehicle or on foot. Because public safety is a 24/7 duty, you’ll work rotating shifts including evenings, weekends, and holiday hours. You’ll respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service and promote the safety of the public and fellow police officers. You'll be a proactive and entrepreneurial member of our department, engaging in community-oriented policing, traffic enforcement, and on occasion, special details. Candidates must meet all administrative requirements.
You’ll receive the latest academic training, preparing you to:
- Maintain your composure in high-stress situations.
- Mediate and de-escalate the interpersonal conflict.
- Make split-second decisions.
- Solve problems, creatively and ethically.
You will also learn about:
- Constitutional policing for the 21st century.
- Baltimore’s diverse communities and cultural competencies.
- Federal, state, and city laws, statutes, and ordinances.
What benefits does the BPD offer?The BPD offers a competitive package that includes:
- A pension after 25 years of service (60% of the sworn member’s salary).
- Health insurance with a prescription, dental, and vision.
- Six months of paid entry-level Police Academy training.
- Pay incentives for a bachelor’s degree.
- Equipment at no cost.
- An option to participate in the tax-deferred, 457B retirement plan (Deferred Compensation).
- A housing tax credit of up to $2,500 per year for officers who live in the city.
What’s the process of becoming a police officer?Applicants must complete the following steps in the hiring process before being hired as a Baltimore Police Officer:
- National Testing Network (NTN) "Frontline National" Test.
- Physical Agility Test.
- Preliminary Interview.
- Background Investigation.
- Polygraph.
- Psychological Examination.
- Physical Examination.
The form that you complete today is not one of the steps listed above. It’s an online application to determine your eligibility to take the Civil Service Test. If you are a Baltimore City resident, we will provide you with a voucher to access the NTN Frontline National test for free.
We’re looking for candidates with the highest moral and ethical standards. The background investigation will help us determine if you display the necessary morals, honesty, trustworthiness, and integrity to join our ranks. You must pass this phase to proceed to the next step in the candidate selection process.
During the investigation stage, members of the Background Investigations Unit will reach out to employers, family, friends, associates, and neighbors. In addition, the investigator will review your work history and speak to co-workers, teachers, and anyone else who can offer insights into your character and fitness for police work.

What are the minimum qualifications?On or before the date of applying, each candidate must:
- Possess a valid driver's license. Please note, that you cannot have any more than 5 points on your license.
- Must have a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certified diploma recognized by the State Board of Education.
- Must not have any current court orders relating to domestic violence.
- Cannot have been dishonorably discharged from the military.
- No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.
- Misdemeanors must be expunged from a criminal record.
- Must not have been arrested for DUI within the past 2 years (24 months).
