PROBATION: All persons, including current City employees, selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months. CLASS DESCRIPTION An Epidemiologist Supervisor oversees studies and investigations of complex and sensitive cases of disease outbreaks in Baltimore City communities. Work of this class involves supervising epidemiologists, nurses, investigators, administrative and office support personnel. Incumbents receive general supervision from an administrative supervisor. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in an office where working conditions are normal. Work requires minimal physical exertion. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must: EDUCATION: Have a master's degree from an accredited college or university in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related field. AND EXPERIENCE: Have three years of postgraduate experience in epidemiology. OR NOTES (EQUIVALENCIES): Have an equivalent combination of education and experience. KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of epidemiologic research methodology, data collection procedures, epidemiologic study design, descriptive and inferential statistics. Knowledge and technical expertise in surveillance, evidence-based public health approaches to prevent and control diseases. Knowledge of the principles and practices of the biomedical sciences and public health. Knowledge of the objectives, scope, and functions of Federal, State and local health laws and regulations that apply to public health. Knowledge of interviewing and investigating techniques used in the epidemiology of human disease, of the methods and practices for the control of human disease and of the causes and sources of contagion of communicable human disease. Ability to apply advanced epidemiologic principles and methods in analysis of health data. Ability to direct epidemiologic investigations or studies. Ability to understand technical and administrative problems and constraints involved in formulating disease control or prevention recommendations. Ability to use statistical analysis software in order to evaluate and interpret epidemiological and statistical data. Ability to interpret and apply complex policies and procedures. Ability to prepare and present reports and recommendations clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to exercise initiative, resourcefulness and sound judgement. Ability to develop innovative approaches and solutions to health problems. Ability to provide effective leadership.
