SUMMARY: Operating under the general direction of the Prevention Services Coordinator, the Behavior Coach for In School Suspension (ISS), Substance Abuse has a supporting role bridging interactions between ISS students, teachers, school staff, and community support agencies. The Behavior Coach works to develop a mentoring rapport that works on replacement behaviors and positive decision making while promoting individual student success and supporting administrative responsibilities. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Job Responsibility Descriptions
Coordinates and assists certified staff in the support of socio-emotional skill building and substance intervention programming to students within In-School Suspension (ISS) for substance abuse violations. Behavior Coach works directly with students in the assimilation and application of substance abuse educational materials and curriculum. Providing support to ISS students helping them to learn refusal skills, about substance education or therapy, pro-social activities and connection to community partners. Coach works with students individually and/or in group sessions.
Facilitates and promotes a safe resource to students and staff regarding Substance Abuse and Behavior Coaching through relationship building skills and a consistent visible presence. This position works in close proximity to students throughout the day demonstrating the skill set and positive decision making that are part of the ISS program. Occasionally, Behavior Coach may intervene to halt or prevent disturbances, or to diffuse threatening and confrontational situations. The duties within this responsibility include but are not limited to general and regular communication with students and assisting certified staff or community service providers in student participation. In addition, this position helps facilitate referrals to the District’s Pathways Program and is considered a first point of contact for this program.
Updates reports and inputs data regarding program stats and results. Student data includes tracking results, re-offense statistics, and non-referred students. Other documentation may include but is not limited to pre/post surveys, student/family intake forms and academic/social emotional assessments. Coach assists Coordinator in the report preparation helping to formulate raw data into a presentable and understand format.
Works as a liaison between community agencies, stakeholders and other district departments that support youth. For example, school Counselors, school Security Officers, Grand Mesa Youth Services Center, Partners, Mesa County Department of Health Services, Mind Springs, and police officers are just a few of the working relationships this position helps to facilitate and promotes for the purpose of providing viable interventions, transition plans, follow-up screening, and continuing support for students returning to a mainstream setting.
Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent required and*;
Minimum one year experience working with students. Preference for experience working with at risk youth or significant emotional/behavioral challenges.
Acceptable demonstration of acceptable education and/or experience will be at the sole discretion of the District
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:
Criminal background check required for hire
Valid Colorado driver’s license
Quality Behavioral Solutions (QBS) certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire
District’s First-Aid, CPR and AED certifications required within 60 days of hire
Must successfully pass 50# lifting test upon hire (recertification every three years
Attend and successfully complete all professional development training as required by the District, law, or as directed by the Coordinator of Prevention Services.
TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:
Strong oral and written English communication skills
Oral bi-lingual skills English/Spanish are desirable
Well-developed customer service and interpersonal relationship building skills
Strong ability to use de-escalation skills to diffuse and manage stressful and fluid situations
Basic math, charting and organizational skills
Basic knowledge of effective behavior management techniques
Ability to collaborate through the complexities of interpersonal relationships
Ability to manage multiple priorities and frequent interruptions in a timely manner
Ability to work interdependently within a team and with minimal direction and/or supervision
Ability to be adaptable and flexible with critical thinking and problem solving capabilities
Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job
Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies and building and department procedures
