    SUMMARY: Paralibrarians provide support services the assigned middle school with worked focused on two overarching goals of developing independent library users and fostering a love of reading. This employee has a variety of responsibilities related to daily library operations, maintaining an inventory of high interest literature, and managing resources including the school’s annual library budget. Other expectations for paralibrarians include coordinating book fairs and as is possible, working with Teachers collaboratively aligning library lessons and activities with curriculum and current learning. Paralibrarians hold a mezzanine role as support staff providing instructional lessons, implementing classroom management techniques which requires a high level of professionalism and coordination with administration and teachers.
    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     Job Responsibility Descriptions
    • Middle School library schedules are flexible and reflect the unique context and master schedule of each school building. Paralibrarians plan prepare, and deliver informative literacy lessons in collaboration with certified teachers. Lesson delivery times vary building to building but 15-20 minute lessons is a targeted best practice. Lessons include for instance the Dewey Decimal System, understanding fiction and non-fiction, accessing the Marmot Library Catalog platforms, and downloading electronic books onto their Chromebook®. Remaining library time includes a variety of activities including independent reading or reading to students in group story time. Employee may also assist students in conducting library research in a variety of medium including ‘print’, electronic, and multimedia resources.
    • Managing the school’s library inventory is the primary administrative responsibility for the Paralibrarian. Employee oversees and evaluates print materials and software for inclusion and purchase at their location using District approved library vendors. Book orders are conducted a minimum of annually, usually each fall, and include the full spectrum of middle school reading levels. Library inventory is developed over time, influenced by past and current curriculum focus, and holds some elements unique to each location’s culture, academic goals, and ancillary fundraising activities. Paralibrarians build library collections analyzing percentage complete for subject matter targeting high interest materials and student curiosity. Bi-lingual and electronic library offerings are developed based on individual school’s interests and needs. Employee is responsible for receiving and shelving received information.
    Daily duties include checking items in and out, re-shelving items and generating overdue notices. Employee also responds to emails and state-wide interlibrary loan correspondence and requests. Paralibrarians are required to report library and inventory statistical data for District level reporting or for other administrative projects as requested.
    • Coordinating the annual distribution and return of 600± Chromebooks for the school. Employee manages the assignment and pick up of Chromebooks inputting assignment data into the established software tracking system. Throughout the school year, students contact the Paralibrarian to report and return any broken or nonworking Chromebooks and employee assigns replacements as well as manages the work order tickets through the Technology Department. This employee also manages the annual return of Chromebooks, ensuring the Chromebook count and noting any issues or pending summer repairs.
    • School book fairs are annual events at some middle school sites. Book fairs are fund raising events that simultaneously foster and support a love of reading with middle school learners. Depending on the support and expectations of building Principals some paralibrarians may organize and coordinate this event. In other scenarios, these events may be organized by school fund raising groups such as the Parent/Teacher Organization and the paralibrarian supports these events in the capacity they are able based on their schedule and other duties. Book fairs can be held in-person/on site or virtually and may offer printed, electronic or a combination of materials and many schools organize both a fall and spring fundraising event.
    • School libraries are sometimes used as a safe place for student’s addressing temporary behavior issues. ‘Time Out’ for a student may occur in the library and the employee follows their school’s protocols and processes for addressing these temporary but possibly disruptive occurrences.
    • Employee is encouraged to attend quarterly District level paralibrarians meetings and trainings. Attendance at such meetings may require temporary scheduling adjustments to accommodate times not a part of the employee’s regular hours. Paralibrarian is encouraged to work with their school administrator to accommodate quarterly attendance in these meetings/trainings
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required with courses in business, library/media management or other related field desirable*;
    • Minimum of one years’ experience in clerical or administrative support role required; preference for prior school district experience;
    • Preference given for prior experience working directly with students;
    *Acceptable demonstration of education and/or experience is at the sole discretion of the District.
    LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:
    • Valid Colorado driver’s license or official form of identification required;
    • Successful passing of criminal background check required for hire;
    • Attend and successfully complete all staff development training as required by state law or as directed by supervisor.
