Job Description

What you will be doing:
The Assistant State Veterinarian supports the state's veterinary programs to control and eradicate communicable animal diseases, to regulate the production and distribution of dairy products, and to regulate growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of produce. This position manages the Grade 'A' Dairy program, the Produce Safety program, and the Animal Disease Traceability program. The Assistant State Veterinarian also investigates animal morbidity and mortality events, and manages voluntary disease certification programs such as tuberculosis, brucellosis, and chronic wasting disease, in accordance with state regulations and federal program standards. This person is responsible for grant and cooperative agreement applications and management. This person performs the duties of the State Veterinarian when the State Veterinarian is absent. This is a dynamic position that works within a One Health framework. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with exceptional organizational, communication, and critical thinking skills to join our team.

Some moving expenses to move to Anchorage may qualify for reimbursement.

The Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Environmental Health works to ensure environmental protection, safe food, and safe drinking water for all Alaskans. The Office of the State Veterinarian works within the One Health model to carry out a wide variety of programs to protect animal and human health. This safeguards the health and food capacity of Alaska's livestock and poultry and prevents the transmission of animal disease to humans. This position is key to protecting public health and animal health, supporting agriculture producers, and ensuring safe and wholesome milk and milk products and fresh produce are sold to the public.

The Assistant State Veterinarian is an integral part of the small team that comprises the Office of the State Veterinarian. The position may qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. The working environment you can expect:
Duties will include regular fieldwork for sample collection; agricultural and livestock producer engagement; performing morbidity/mortality investigations including necropsies and sample preparation in the lab; representing Alaska at various state and national events; and routine office work and general supervisory duties.

The Environment Health Laboratory/Office of the State Veterinarian is in its own building near the U-Med district in Anchorage. There is easy, free parking. It is close to public transportation and local restaurants with sidewalks and access to Far North Bicentennial Park and Campbell Tract trails. The EHL also has bike racks and shower facilities for those that use alternate transportation or take advantage of lunch time exercise (walk, run, ski, bike, etc.). There are many wildlife viewing opportunities right from the office.

We are looking for a candidate that has experience in the following areas:
This position requires a set of competencies that will contribute to your success and help you thrive in a rewarding work environment. Here are some of the key areas we are looking for:
  • Extensive knowledge of the general principles and practices of professional veterinary medicine.
  • Thorough knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to animal health, livestock husbandry and food production and poultry health.
  • Thorough knowledge of microbiology, parasitology, pathology, immunology, serology, and other sciences applicable to disease problems and prevention, control or eradication programs.
  • Considerable knowledge of livestock management, animal welfare, and wildlife and environmental factors contributing to animal health problem; and
  • Ability to work with a high degree of independence.

Minimum Qualifications

Licensure as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine by the State of Alaska;
AND
Two years of professional experience in veterinary medicine for large animals;
AND
Successful completion of the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service's National Veterinary Accreditation Program.
