Pay: $110,000 - $125,000 per year. The Controller shall be a self-motivated, critical-thinking senior leader reporting to the Chief Financial Officer. The Controller performs professional accounting, administrative, and managerial activities. Plans and directs complex projects involving domestic and international accounting, fixed asset accounting, restricted fund accounting, cash flow analysis and investment accounting for the University. Responsible for all University financial reporting and Form 990. Supervises accounting staff in department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Management:
Leads operations of the accounting department, including oversight of the annual budget, compliance reports, fixed assets, accounts payable, and internal control functions. Produces monthly and year-end financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Leads, trains, develops and evaluates professional accounting staff performing tasks related to accounting standards and processes.
Ensures the integrity of the University's financial records and the transactions in accordance with GAAP.
Develops reconciliation processes and procedures that ensure effective integration of financial transactions.
Coordinates scheduling, processing and other activities related to the year-end closeout process in preparation for the new fiscal year.
Maintains documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
Research and resolves accounting financial issues and analyze the effect of new accounting guidance on the University.
Manages process to effectively monitor the operations of domestic and international locations.
Oversees consolidation of international campuses.
Recommends enhancements in systems, policies, and procedures to CFO and implements approved changes.
Communicates financial issues and strategies to CFO.
Reporting
Generates monthly financial reports for a variety of internal and external constituents, including the University's Board of Trustees.
Creates and provides accurate, timely, and actionable analyses, data, and other critical information to support management's monitoring and decision-making process.
Prepares weekly Cash Flow Analysis
Provides monitoring control of University financial activity and internal controls
Prepares various reports for Leadership
Coordinates the preparation of the annual return of the University's federal form 990 and 990T.
Recommends benchmarks in which to measure the performance of University operations.
Coordinates the annual external audit of the University's financial statements and other required financial compliance reports. Includes preparing work papers, reports, and analysis related to the University's domestic and consolidated operations for internal and external audits.
Prepares operating forecasts and compare results to budget.
Calculates variances from budget and report significant issues to management.
Provides financial information that supports the University's strategic management initiatives.
Provides guidance and technical support to University faculty and staff with accounting, accounts payable, fixed asset, or other related issues.
Oversees the 1099 reporting function of the University and the year-end distribution of 1099 forms to the University's vendors.
Compliance
Coordinates the provision of information to external auditors for annual audit and ensure financial reports are prepared in accordance with FASB 116 and 117.
Complies with local, state, federal government and donor requirements.
Prepares the indirect cost rate proposal submitted to DHHS to recover the University's indirect costs in relation to government gifts and contracts.
Coordinates accounting and oversight of federal award and grant programs to enhance compliance with regulations and requirements.
Oversees sales and use tax procedures of multiple states.
Oversees the monthly reconciliations including the University's MasterCard/Visa and Discover accounts and reconciliation of cash accounts.
Ensures that required debt payments are made on a timely basis.
Maintains the chart of accounts including establishing new funds, endowment, student loans, expendable gifts and building funds.
Monitors accuracy of the Accounting System to protect the integrity of financial records.
Manages accounting of trust assets, pledges, gift agreements, wills, trust documents and related information to ensure compliance with GAAP.
Oversees calculation and distribution of investment gains and losses to individual endowment fund accounts to provide account managers with accurate data, as well as, to satisfy donor restrictions.
Manages property accounting transactions for all the University's fixed assets and the fixed asset sub-ledgers, to and including physical inventory tagging, depreciation and capitalization in accordance with the University's policy.
Collaborates with the international controllers to ensure alignment with University goals.
Participates in the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a new enterprise system.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's in Accounting required with a minimum of 10 years of experience in a managerial or supervisory accounting position, or a combination of education, experience and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities.
Functional/Technical Skills*
Knowledge of accounting, not-for-profit, and auditing principles and practices.
Working knowledge of automated accounting systems, and demonstrated ability to direct microcomputer operations and financial applications.
Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including spreadsheet and accounting applications.
Sound analytical and communication skills.
High degree of ethical behavior.
Conscientious work ethic.
Ability to adhere to strict confidentiality.
Ability to prepare a variety of financial statements, reports, and analysis in accordance with generally accepted accounting practices.
Ability to keep apprised of current financial and accounting practices and procedures.

Ability to research and apply governmental rules and regulations related to accounting and auditing practices.
Preferred Qualifications
CPA or Equivalent Preferred.
MBA a plus.
