Provides leadership and direction for policy recommendations and administrative Federal acknowledgment of Indian Tribes.
Serves as technical advisor to principals on related Federal acknowledgment and programmatic matters to ensure coordination, adequacy, and timeliness of work. This is critical to ensuring practices and procedures are in accordance with regulation and policies and day-to-day operations of programs are managed and executed effectively to support the public interest.
Manages organizational project/program resources, budget management, and financial analysis and reporting, related to personnel administration to support the programmatic and administrative operations, resource management and support services under the Federal Acknowledgement program.
Participates in organization planning, policy, and decision-making in regard to legislation, policy and improvement criteria for development and implementation.
Manages short- and long-range strategic planning and activities for the Federal Acknowledgment program functions and availability of resources, administrative operations. Coordinates support and performance measurement, program objectives for workforce, quality improvement and internal controls, analytics, and reporting tools.
Provides advice and counsel to senior leadership and staff, leads recruitment and retention activities for the Office and selects candidates for positions and handles personnel actions to support organizational capacity. Resolves issues, complaints and handles disciplinary actions, as needed. Ensures staff training is provided, handles leave approvals, awards process and adheres to the provision of Equal Employment Opportunity.
Work is performed independently and is primarily subject to review to assure fulfillment of overall objectives and conformance to broad Agency policies and legislation. Technical and managerial recommendations are accepted as authoritative in alignment with AS-IA principals. Review of work is limited to evaluation of program effectiveness and the accomplishment of Department and Indian Affairs goals and objectives.

This is a supervisory position. Under provision of the CSRA, first-time supervisors are required to serve a one year supervisory probationary period before their appointment becomes final. Those who do not satisfactorily complete this probationary period will be returned to positions of no lower grade and pay than those they occupied before assuming their supervisory assignment.
