Job Summary
As part of the LAS International Programs Team, Academic Program Coordinator for the the Global Leaders Program (GLP) advises students and coordinates GLP activities with students, community partners and faculty. The incumbent shares in GLP's mission to create inclusive and equitable environments that transform students and communities through cross-cultural collaboration, dialogue, and human-centered community building.

Duties & Responsibilities

Student Advising
• Advise current and prospective students on program requirements, application process, scholarships, travel planning and logistics, and personal concerns.
  • Maintain walk-in and by appointment student advising hours. Respond to student inquiries by email, phone and through virtual and in-person advising sessions.
  • Develop and revise informational materials, website, resources, handbooks, and other student-facing content.
  • Conduct informational sessions and assist with pre-departure orientation for all student, staff, and faculty participants in program travel.
  • Promote program and recruit students by representing the Global Leaders Program at student recruitment and yield events.
Community Partner and Faculty Relations
• Identify local community partners for design challenge themes each year.
  • Provide an orientation for community partners and mentors prior to the kickoff in the fall and spring semesters.
  • Act as the primary community partner liaison for GLP staff and student teams.
  • Recruit faculty members to instruct/facilitate courses and workshops across the four-year program.
Program Coordination
  • Coordinate annual recruitment and application cycle for students, working closely with LAS Recruitment and Admissions staff.
  • Plan and administer local and international program events including the two Kickoff and Social Innovation Forum events held each fall and spring semesters; coordinate travel arrangements.
  • Monitor and track the scholarship fund for each participant.
  • Create an annual report using data from student, mentor and community partner survey evaluations.
  • Contribute to overall program marketing, recruitment and outreach initiatives through events, social media and presentations; develop marketing materials.
  • Work with Illinois International’s Office of International Safety & Security to ensure international travel programs are in line with campus policies related to health, safety, and risk management. Train staff and faculty chaperones on best practices.
  • Will be required to work nights and weekends if/when traveling with students on international programs.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree. A total of two (2) years (24 months) work experience in student development and/or community engagement in higher education or a professional organization.

Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree
Three years’ work experience in student leadership development and community engagement initiatives
Knowledge of and/or experience in using a Human-Centered Design framework to address social challenges
Experience collaborating with faculty members to design and/or implement courses
International experience that consists of a service-learning or community outreach component
Experience living/working/studying abroad
Effective project management experience
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, Zoom, web and social media, Banner, and degree audit systems, Terra Dotta Systems (TDS)
Professional fluency in English and at least one other language, preference for Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Arabic, Kiswahili, or Spanish.

  • Demonstrated ability to work from a strengths-based advising perspective.
  • Demonstrated ability to track and assess student academic progress.
  • Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, particularly those that enable the candidate to effectively communicate clearly with a wide range of constituencies including, students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni and partners.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, with a wide range of on-campus and off-campus constituencies.
  • Knowledge of academic skills and student development issues associated with undergraduate student populations, especially those that require enhanced advising and academic skills support.


Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. Salary is commensurate with experience.
