Job Summary
The Human Resources (HR) Business Partner reports to the Department of Human Resources and provides support to employees and leaders throughout UWM. The HR Business Partner provides consultation and support to assigned client group. The role will partner with client group leaders to develop and execute HR strategies and objectives. The HR Business Partner serves as the primary point of contact to assigned client groups related to human resource management, policies, procedures, employment law and fundamentals of all core areas of human resources. . The HR Business Partner's responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Maintain knowledge of and counsel and advise client groups and their employees in all areas of human resources including staffing and retention, employee engagement, workforce safety, employee relations, talent planning, performance management, compensation, benefits, equal employment opportunity, affirmative action, organizational development, and compliance with employment and regulatory requirements. The HR Business Partner will call upon subject matter experts within HR to meet client needs.
  • Manage and resolve complex human resources issues, including performance management, organizational development, and employee relations matters.
  • Work closely with management and employees to address the work environment, including workforce planning, building morale, increasing retention, and managing work relationships.
  • Provide solution-orientation advice and develop strong partnerships to meet the service needs of client groups.


  • Hybrid work options may be available. Work will be performed primarily on the UW-Milwaukee campus, with requests for remote work considered after the initial training period. Specifics regarding work location requirements will be discussed during the interview process.
    Minimum Qualifications
    • 2 years of professional experience in human resources disciplines
    • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business or related field OR equivalent work experience
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience working as an HR Business Partner or similar advisory role in a higher education setting or other complex organization
    • Experience working independently to advise and support leadership on a broad spectrum of HR matters
    • Demonstrated experience working in multiple human resource disciplines
    • Demonstrated experience analyzing, interpreting, and/or reporting on data for workforce strategy and planning
    • Demonstrated experience comprehending, interpreting, and complying with applicable employment laws, rules and regulations, policies, and guidelines
    • Coursework in Human Resources Management and/or an HR Certification (e.g., SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR, etc.)
    • Demonstrated experience developing and/or implementing HR strategies and initiatives aligned with the overall operational needs of an organization
    • Successful problem-solving experience with employee relations matters
