The Applied Physics Laboratory is a research unit at the University of Washington. Our research expertise is in ocean physics and engineering, ocean and medical acoustics, polar science, environmental remote sensing, and signal processing. In the Electronic and Photonic System (EPS) Department, engineers work on large scale, state-of-the-art research projects to advance important scientific inquiries made by sponsors ranging from the National Science Foundation to the United States Navy. The projects focus on cabled ocean systems requiring unique power and telemetry systems to support instrumentation hundreds of kilometers offshore connected in real time with transoceanic cable technology.

The Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is hiring an Electrical Engineer with Digital Electronics experience to work on cutting edge applied ocean projects for a diverse set of customers and applications. The successful candidate will be part of an integrated engineering team that designs, builds, installs, operates and maintains complex electrical/mechanical systems to solve challenging problems in novel ways. The person selected will be responsible for the design, test and production of new electronics systems including acoustic data collection systems, high power acoustic amplifiers and control electronics in highly integrated ocean instrument packages. In addition, this role will support the design team for building subsea cabled systems including networked real-time control systems and long-range telemetry interfaces, and analyzing requirements and documenting designed systems.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Design, Build, and Test:

Approaches novel assignments and applies sophisticated research techniques, networks, and resources, and moves the project forward from inception to execution. Works on extremely complex research endeavors which results in the creation of new concepts, applications, designs or new areas of research.

Programs and debugs complex circuit boards, designs high data rate data acquisition interfaces. Identifies and documents processor requirements, specifications and identifies appropriate suppliers for components. Collaborates with Senior Electrical Engineers in designing, building, and testing electrical components that are extremely complex; and/or projects that are extremely large in scope.

Deploy and Operate:

In collaboration with Program Manager, participates at-sea installation, operation, maintenance, repair and recovery of systems.

Other:

Ensures Lab safety compliance in the Electrical Engineering workspaces. Suggests improvements to departmental processes and policies.

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering field.

* 5 or more years of experience in a related engineering field.

* US Citizen.

* Eligible to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

* Experience with FPGA design.

* Experience designing data acquisition systems.

* Proficient in embedded system design.

* Experience in network programming.

* Ability to plan and organize technical projects.

* Ability to participate in ship-based field work.

* Demonstrated excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

* Demonstrated organizational skills, self-motivation, flexibility, and the ability to thrive in a creative, entrepreneurial environment.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

The person hired into this position must be a U.S. citizen and successfully obtain and continue to maintain a Department of Defense (DOD) Personnel Security Clearance. Desired:

* Experience with microcontroller interface design and programming in assembly and C.

* Experience with high voltage power transmissions systems.

* Experience with low power design techniques.

* Experience with high speed optical network interface design.
