Purpose

Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Chief Business Officer will serve as a key member of the University Development Office (UDO) leadership team, and is responsible for providing strategic counsel, financial leadership and direction to drive UDO's financial planning and growth objectives. This role will play a crucial part in shaping the financial strategy, optimizing operational efficiency, and ensuring fiscal integrity across all aspects of the organization.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Team Development:

  • Provide visionary leadership and mentorship to the finance team by fostering a culture of collaboration, service-orientation, high standards and continuous improvement.
  • Build and maintain a strong relationship with the University's Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Procurement and Payment Services (PPS), Business Contracts offices (BCO) and other administrative offices.
  • Acts as chief financial officer and serves as UDO's representative on the Council of University Business Officers (CUBO).
  • Recruits, develops, and retains high-performing business and administrative professionals in the areas of business and facilities.

Financial Strategy and Management:

  • Partner with Chief of Staff and UDO Talent Development/Human Resources on staffing strategy and relevant policies.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive financial strategies aligned with UDO's goals and objectives and university policies.
  • Provides strategic counsel on initiatives, resources, opportunities, and challenges while ensuring that daily operations advance the mission of UDO and that resources are deployed wisely and efficiently. Executes the annual certification letter and performs account certifications and review of balances.
  • Coordinates the preparation of the fiscal budget for UDO and prepares forecasts for the Vice President for Development and other UDO leaders. Participates in the five-year budget planning process.
  • Ensures that stakeholders have access to financial reporting and analyses to act as knowledgeable participants in decisions, while aligning the operations of UDO with the fiscal and productivity guidelines of the university. Provides regular financial analysis and other statistical reports to the Vice President for Development and other UDO leaders.

Facilities Oversight

  • Oversees the Development Office Building (DEV) operations and management, including coordination and/or support of renovation project, space assignments, and space enhancements.
  • Works with the Vice President for Development and Chief of Staff on space allocation and to design use of UDO space within the DEV.
  • Partners with IT Operations Management on IT space requirements.

Risk Management, Training & Policy:

  • Oversee annual finance and travel training, providing guidance on travel and reimbursement policies for UDO.
  • Interprets and effectively communicates policy while implementing and leading processes to facilitate and maintain compliance.
  • Develop and conduct regular audits on financially related processes, implementing solutions to ensure efficiency, while promoting continuous improvement for the department.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business or related field.
  • 5 years of relevant administrative experience, including financial and operational leadership responsibilities in a college, university, or comparably complex environment.
  • Proficiency in financial software and tools such as Excel, COGNOS, FAMIS, AssetWorks, Tableau, and SQL.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills and professional demeanor. Ability to operate creatively, collegially, and effectively in a complex academic and business environment across all levels, including with faculty, deans, central administration, and senior institutional officials.
  • Demonstrated record of leadership and of establishing and maintaining productive, collaborative relationships across a variety of constituents, both internal and external to the school.
  • Demonstrated expertise working with finances and budgets.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving, and team-building skills.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in finance, business or related field.
  • 10 years of relevant experience, including at the senior management level in budgeting, forecasting, human resources accounting and reporting, IT systems, and internal accounting control and compliance.
  • Experience working as the finance director, chief business officer or equivalent of a university college, school or unit.
  • Familiarity with both Federal and State of Texas statutes and regulations related to finances and accounting, and knowledge of GAAP.
  • Experience at UT Austin in comparable or related roles.
  • Experience with or knowledge of higher education fundraising operations.
Salary Range

$140,000 depending on qualifications

  • This leadership position will primarily work on campus, while also eligible for hybrid Flexible Work Arrangements as fitting for the school's leadership positions. Remote schedules are determined by the business needs and with VP approval

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
