University of Hawaii system is Hiring a (Casual) Research Assistant Near Honolulu, HI

Description

Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees (i.e. paid holidays/leave). Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

To support Professor Lilikalii Kame'eleihiwa of Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies in the Hawai'i State Archives Genealogy Recovery of 9,000 Pages of Handwritten Hawaiian Genealogy. Dr. Kame'eleihiwa is a professor in the Hawai'inuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, this position is temporary. Contingent on availability of funds.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the general supervision of Professor Lilikala Kame'eleihiwa, Principal Investigator for the HSAGR 9,000 Pages Research project, to:

* Help Transcribe the 54 Books of Hawaiian Genealogy comprised of 9,000 handwritten pages of Genealogy;

* Help footnote unknown genealogies, not published by Kamakau and Fornander, but handwritten in 9,000 pages in 54 Books of Hawaiian Genealogy;

* Upload transcribed and footnoted completed pages on an HSAGR website every month;

* Help edit and footnote HSAGR Typescripts;

* Help transcribe video presentations;

* Help publicize the HSAGR website with completed pages throughout the University of Hawai'i system, Hawai'i, the continental U.S. and abroad;

* Coordinate distribution of information about HSAGR events, such as publicity, symposium transcripts, etc, with Hawaiian communities throughout Hawai'i, continental U.S. and abroad;

* Assist with logistics for events organized by HSAGR;

* Attend workshops and lectures put on by HSAGR; and

* Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

* Experience in genealogy research, having taken HWST 341: Hawaiian Genealogies. and having received an A for the course.

* Ability to read and write in the Hawaiian Language;

* Ability to read and transcribe handwritten script:

* Ability to translate from Hawaiian to English;

* Ability to do research in Hawaiian records, such as the Buke Mahelc. and other historical records in order to footnote transcriptions;

* Excellent writing and research skills.

Desirable Qualifications:

* Experience in formatting materials for posting on the web;

* Experience in managing websites;

* Experience in making training videos for researching genealogy;

* Experience in video recording and editing;

* Experience in transcription;

* Experience in archival research;

* Experience in translation of Hawaiian chants and mele;

* Fluency in the Hawaiian Language;

* Ability to work independently and/or t0 supervise others;

* Experience in taking the HWST 342: Chiefs of the Hawaiian Kingdom classes and earning excellent grades;

* Demonstrated knowledge of Hawaiian Cosmogonic Genealogies and Hawaiian History,

* Publication of articles in the field of Hawaiian Studies;

* Excellent writing, analyt1cal, computer, and oral communication skills: and,

* Knowledge of Hawaiian communities and values.
