Hawaiinuiakea, School of Hawaiian Knowledge, Native Hawaiian Student Services (Manoa), is looking to fill two (2) Graduate Research Assistant vacancies at 0.5 FTE, extramural funding to begin ASAP, continuation subject to satisfactory work performance, academic progress and availability of funds.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of Native Hawaiian Student Services (NHSS) Kapaakea team:
 

  • Assists with the day-to-day management of the NHSS Student Scholar Centers to include assisting students, staff, and/or community members who require support and information regarding the NHSS Student Scholar Centers and affiliated programs;
  • Assists with the implementation of the Kapaakea Student Advisory Board;
  • Assists with the creation of a yearly Native Hawaiian student profile, as well as related research and evaluation on Hawaiian student access and success within the University of Hawaii System;
  • Assists the faculty and staff team with the development and implementation of various co-curricular programming, including workshops, annual student research conference, summer institute program, webinars and forums for undergraduate and graduate students;
  • Supports NHSS program students, including counseling, and peer mentorship support; 
  • Conducts classroom, school visits and other tabling and outreach events to inform prospective students of NHSS programming and services to recruit students into program and services;
  • Assists with the collection of grant data such as maintaining all sign ins and program data;
  • Assists with liaison functions between NHSS and various NHSS partners, providing meeting coordination and record-keeping support, workshop design and materials and program coordination;
  • Support Native Hawaiian Student Services events and assist with general administrative tasks;
  • Designs and implements student workshops, trainings, presentations, and other events;
  • Assists with administrative functions such as processing purchase orders and payments to vendors, tracking program participants, and communicating with partners. 
  • The GRA will also work collaboratively with Native Hawaiian Student Services and will perform other duties as assigned;
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Applicants must have earned a BA in Hawaiian Language, Hawaiian Studies, Ethnic Studies or any related discipline; 
  2. Strong organizational, writing and communication skills; 
  3. Demonstrated experience with Hawaiian programs, organizations and/or education;
  4. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff and students; 
  5. Knowledge of Hawaiian language and culture. 
  6. Applicants must be enrolled full-time at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, in a graduate degree (Masters or PhD) program under the University of Hawaii at Manoa Office of Graduate Education at the time of hire and throughout the appointment period, and be in good academic standing and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 or above. 
  7. Applicant needs to be able to work independently and reliably within a team.
  8. Must be available summer, evenings and weekends.
Desirable Qualifications:
  1. BA or MA in Hawaiian Language, Hawaiian Studies, or related discipline with substantial background in Hawaiian studies and language; demonstrated experience working with Hawaiian cultural-based learning and Hawaiian students in higher education; 
  2. Demonstrated university teaching experience; demonstrated experience in organizing and implementing service learning and civic engagement programs in Native Hawaiian communities; 
  3. Prior work experience on a University of Hawaii campus; 
  4. Experience with student academic and/or career counseling; 
  5. Demonstrated experience with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Pages, iMovie, and Photoshop software; 
  6. Familiarity with Native Hawaiian Student Services initiatives; 
  7. Knowledge of University of Hawaii System including its academic policies; and knowledge of the educational needs of Native Hawaiian students.
