In consultation with and under direction of the MQST Program Director, the incumbent will provide technical expertise and professional engineering support for the Master of Quantum Science and Technology instructional laboratories. They will apply physics/engineering concepts to participate in the research-validated design of new instructional laboratory curriculum, maintain and continually improve existing laboratory curriculum and associated equipment, and be primarily responsible for the physical laboratory spaces and all lab equipment. Provide leadership and instructional impact by providing expertise and oversight of the creation of new laboratory experiments, the purpose of which is to illustrate important physical phenomena of relevance to QST applications together with the development of transferable laboratory skills. In consultation with faculty, apply scientific and engineering knowledge to plan the implementation and deployment of instructional lab equipment, help instructors supervise teaching assistants assigned to MQST instructional labs, and ensure their proper training on the procedures of all laboratory modules. Independently manage the instructional laboratory budget(s) and organize engineering projects that maintain, refine, repair, and improve the existing experiments. Maintain and create documentation explaining the theory underpinning all laboratory experiments and the operation of all equipment required to complete the labs. Organize, maintain and solve problems with laboratory infrastructure and computers. Consult with course instructors to manage conflicting demands on students time and on timely and equitable use of lab equipment. Provide leadership in the design of new curricular materials and teaching methods to improve the laboratory instructional component of the MQST program. Take ownership of other duties as demanded and needed for the implementation of the MQST laboratory curriculum. Percentage of Time: 100% Shift Start: 8:00 am Shift End: 5:00 pm Qualifications for Position 20 Records Qualifications Required/Preferred 1. Bachelor's degree in physics, engineering, or related physical science, or an equivalent combination of education in and experience. Required 2. PhD degree physics, engineering, or related physical science, or an equivalent combination of education in and experience. Preferred 3. At least one year of experience working in a laboratory environment in physics or related field or equivalent combination of experience in higher education. Required 4. Working knowledge of graduate-level physics concepts and demonstrated ability to apply familiarity with physics experiment equipment/methodologies used in instructional settings. Required 5. Working knowledge of quantum information science concepts and demonstrated ability to apply familiarity with advanced quantum physics experiment equipment/methodologies used in instructional settings. Preferred 6. Ability to work efficiently and effectively, independently and/or collaboratively, on a variety of simultaneous lab support tasks. Required 7. Proficiency with data acquisition equipment, interfaces, and/or scientific software used in introductory lab settings. Preferred 8. Strong interpersonal skills to work and communicate effectively with students, faculty, and fellow staff, both verbally and in writing. Required 9. Skill in using hand and power tools to repair and/or modify lab equipment. Can be trained 10. Skill in using electronic instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, signal generators, diagnostic meters, and amplifiers. Can be trained 11. Skill in the proper and safe operation of laser systems, optical components, and opto-mechanic hardware. Can be trained 12. Ability to apply basic physics/engineering concepts & problem-solving skills to diagnose and/or repair equipment used for laboratory experiments. Can be trained 13. Skill and physical ability to safety lift and transport heavy (up to 25 lbs.) equipment without damage to equipment or injury to self or others. Can be trained 14. Ability to read and/or interpret schematics and/or service documentation and specifications pertaining to the assembly and/or maintenance of lab equipment. Can be trained 15. Ability to asses and prioritize lab support needs independently, proactively solve problems, and follow through on assignments with minimal directions. Required 16. Ability to adjust to shifting workflows and/or priorities as determined by MQST Program Director and needs of the MQST Instructional Labs. Required 17. Proficiency with computers and/or office/data analysis software. Required 18. Willingness to learn new technical and/or lab support skills. Required 19. Ability to maintain regular hours/schedule and respond promptly to real-time Instructional Labs support requests. Required 20. Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions.
