Trout Unlimited is Hiring a Maine Program Manager Near Portland, ME

Description

 POSITION SUMMARY

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, self-directed, and capable person to work with Trout Unlimited to lead a comprehensive program aimed at on-the-ground restoration and reconnection, policy, advocacy, and land protection efforts to benefit native salmonid species across Maine. Maine is unique amongst the lower 48 states because it contains the last remaining stronghold for intact native brook trout populations and is the only state that contains wild populations of Atlantic salmon and Arctic charr. The Program Manager will work with state and federal agencies, TU volunteers, and other partners to advance TU’s mission in Maine. Though not initially a supervisory position, it is expected to become one as the successful candidate will fundraise and build a team of conservation professionals in Maine. The position location is flexible within the state of Maine.

TU has active projects underway to improve habitat through strategic wood addition and small dam removals ranging from the coast to the mountains. The Program Manager will provide strategic leadership for the Maine program and policies that benefit TU’s mission. This position requires an individual who works well with diverse stakeholders, is action oriented, and can problem solve to accomplish restoration work. Competitive candidates for this position will have demonstrated experience with project management and technical abilities related to river restoration, fisheries, ecology, partnership-building, fundraising, and an understanding of policies relevant to coldwater conservation and land protection in Maine. They must have the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders and audiences.

This full-time position reports to the Director of the Northeast Coldwater Habitat Program and will occasionally require evening and weekend hours. This position is eligible to work from home full-time; however, the candidate must reside in Maine.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify funding sources, prepare budgets and proposals, and secure funding for the Maine program and projects, including building relationships with major donors and foundations.
  • Manage project implementation including budgeting, scheduling, partner coordination, contractor selection and oversight, and reporting.
  • Develop and manage partnerships with state and federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and academia.
  • Engage TU’s regional members and other volunteers to increase our conservation impact in following our united, “One-TU” approach.
  • Manage the program budget, and hire, train, and oversee conservation staff.
  • Work with TU volunteer leaders and other partners to develop action plans and long-range strategies for areas identified as Priority Waters across Maine.
  • Represent TU in meetings and on committees relevant to TU’s mission.
  • Develop content and share communication materials with the public and volunteers.

*The above is not an all-inclusive description or list of duties and responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree and minimum five years professional experience in watershed restoration, fisheries biology, ecology, environmental policy, or similar field.
  • Demonstrated success in grant writing and ability to track and manage program spending and budgets.
  • Ability to manage complex projects and manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside of TU.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability and desire to work respectfully with diverse interests and communities.
  • Ability to travel throughout Maine and conduct field work as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license and a personal automobile.
  • Passion for river and salmon/trout conservation.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Staff and leadership at TU understand that life outside of work is important to personal health, and we strive to create a healthy and family-friendly atmosphere. This is a full-time position with a generous benefits package. The approximate salary range is $65,000 - $75,000 depending on experience.

Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data.

At TU, we value a diverse representation of staff, and we actively seek candidates for this position who come from communities that have been historically under-represented in conservation and those who have been most impacted by degraded rivers and streams. We are committed to building space for all people to participate in our work to care for trout and salmon and clean our shared waters.

We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and welcome you to read more about TU’s equity practice and values.
