Theatre West is Hiring a Managing Director Near Los Angeles, CA

Overview:

Theatre West is seeking a part-time Managing Director who is passionate about Theatre and the Arts and adept at handling the day-to-day operations of a nonprofit membership company located at 3333 Cahuenga Blvd, LA, where it operates. Reporting and in service to the Artistic Board, the Managing Director will develop strong working relationships with members, employees, volunteers, the community, the Artistic Board, Advisory Board, and future Executive Board to ensure the company and theatre remain vibrant, active, and advance their mission to nurture and develop theatre artists by giving them the opportunity to expand their talents and skills through workshops and public performances.

The Managing Director coordinates with our Publicist, Graphic Designer, Social Media Coordinator, Production Producers, Technical Director, Intern (Grant permitting), and volunteer Office Assistant when present.

The position is accountable to its 125 members and is supervised by the Artistic Board, which consists of 7 Theatre West members who serve staggered 2-year terms.

Theatre West presents live theatre productions, including fully staged productions of new plays or revivals, music, the WestFest Annual Festival, readings, storytelling, and our Storybook theatre program of Equity children's theatre. It also conducts weekly professional workshops in acting, singing, Shakespeare, the Associates’ program, and the development of new plays and projects through the writer's workshop. Theatre West's education programs provide theatre instruction to Title 1 public schools.

Theatre West is seeking an ambitious collaborator with skills in multiple areas to continue building upon the company's 62-year legacy and facilitating achieving its goals and plans. The Managing Director will have an enterprising spirit, a background in business, arts administration, nonprofit management, a passion for Theatre, and initiative that will ensure the company’s longevity.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for the financial operations of Theatre West, including organizational budget creation and tracking of all expenses and revenues, cash-flow projections, preparing payroll insurance, communicating the financial condition, and preparing statements to the Artist Board and Membership, including a weekly financial ledger to present to the board at weekly meetings.
  • Collaborate and work with external accountants on annual audits and tax return preparation.
  • Ensure the company is fully compliant with all local, state, and federal regulations and laws governing nonprofit organizations, charities, and businesses.
  • Grant Writing: must have experience and a proven track record in grant writing.
  • Negotiate and prepare all artist contracts, rental agreements, and co-productions, in addition to ensuring Theatre West is in full compliance with its Actors Equity TYA Tier 2 per performance agreement.
  • Cultivate and recruit potential candidates to serve on Theatre West's Executive Board and Advisory Board.
  • Manage individual giving programs in collaboration with the artistic board, including annual appeals, donor cultivation, fundraisers, solicitation, and organizing special donor events. Track all donations/donors and attend Opening Night Premieres to meet with our donor base and potential new donors.
  • Theatre West is a brick-and-mortar business. The Managing Director will be required to be present to work on-site. The Managing Director must oversee our venue's maintenance, upkeep, and operational needs (inside and outside) and report any findings that must be addressed to the Artistic Board.
  • Manage volunteers, including Community Service Volunteers and Interns.
  • Develop and implement marketing and promotional campaigns in collaboration with the Artistic Board and Social Media Director for all company productions, including weekly e-blasts, print and web-based advertising, direct mail, collateral distribution, and social media posting.
  • Advise and guide production producers in executing each production and project from the business perspective.
  • Respond to general office and rental inquiries.
  • Attend weekly Artistic Board meetings to update the board on all upcoming projects and grants and present a weekly ledger.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business or Theatre Arts Management
  • Previous experience working in nonprofit theatres and/or arts organizations.
  • Passion for live theatre.
  • Working knowledge of PayPal, MailChimp, Ovation Tix (Audience Professional), SMUDataArts, Quick Books, Gusto, MS Office, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, Zoom, Google Docs, TeamUps, Dropbox
  • Grant writing and proven history in fundraising, especially securing grants.
  • Experience managing a team of volunteers.
  • Strong project management experience and the ability to juggle multiple projects concurrently.
  • A collaborative spirit and an ability to inspire and engage the company to achieve its ambitions.
  • Must live in the greater Los Angeles area
