Reports to: Executive Director

Location: Washington, D.C. - Hybrid

Status: Full-time; Exempt

Salary: $140-180k Annually

Position Summary

The Director of Development will be an integral member of the senior leadership team and is a senior position with responsibilities for planning, organizing and working directly with the Executive Director and senior management to implement a robust fundraising program. The Director of Development manages across all programs and campaigns to determine the resource needs of the organization and has one direct report. As Director of Development, you will serve as a key leader for our fundraising program

As Director of Development, you will:

  • Manage across multiple programs and highly diverse internal working groups
  • Project manage all aspects of fundraising activity across complex infrastructure
  • Bring expertise regarding managing ‘up’ and be able to coordinate with senior level team members
  • Manage day to day fundraising and grant management work streams
  • Oversee the planning, organizing, and strategizing of all development work streams including major donors, grant management and weekly meetings with senior leadership.
  • Be comfortable meeting prospective donors and supporters on a continual basis to establish effective communications with them.
  • Be flexible to serve as behind-the-scenes relationship manager where appropriate. 
  • Oversee a landscape analysis to identify, cultivate and solicit major donors.
  • Oversee all aspects of grant management which includes research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and senior management to develop proposals, manage relationships and track prospects and active grants.
  • Represent the organization with external prospective funders and partners, as needed.
  • Oversee fundraising database and tracking systems.
  • Manage special projects across teams for key events.
  • Manage executive team’s executive assistant to handle scheduling and special projects as necessary. 
  • Perform other related duties as requested.

About You:

  • You have working knowledge of fundraising for both c3 and c4 organizations.
  • You have knowledge and experience in fundraising techniques particularly in major gifts.
  • You have experience building and working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. 
  • You have experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, specifically marginalized communities, in considering the impact and outcomes of decision-making.
  • You are comfortable with and thrive in fast paced environments.
  • You are an excellent verbal and written communicator. 
  • You have excellent managerial skills and ability to evaluate the work of others.
  • You are highly organized, flexible, and able to effectively multitask priorities across a variety of workstreams.
  • You are a strong problem solver and leader in project management.
  • You have a track record of managing up and fostering deep interpersonal relationships.
  • You are comfortable building and collaborating with a team and motivating staff while also having the ability to drive work independently.
  • You are a “self-starter” who exhibits self-reliance and self-discipline.
  • You are able to maintain discretion and confidentiality with information and in handling relationships.
  • You possess at least eight years of fundraising experience and leading fundraising in the nonprofit sector.
  • You understand the broad political landscape and ecosystem of our country’s most pressing issues.

Benefits

Comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees are able to enroll in 401k retirement plan and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 120 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90-days of employment.
