HJF is seeking a Systems Administrator I The System Administrator I is part of the IT Systems Team within the Diagnostics and Countermeasures Branch (DCB), within the Center for Infectious Disease Research (CIDR), at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). The incumbent will primarily support the laboratory software, Freezerworks, an application that provides specimen/sample management and tracks freezer inventories within DCB laboratories. The incumbent will be responsible for defining user requirements through to solution design, development, testing, implementation, administration, and user support/training. Additionally, the incumbent will assist with other software applications within the DCB portfolio in support of work being conducted by DCB scientists, laboratory groups, and Leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates Freezerworks application requirements to support DCB operations and recommends solutions for Freezerworks systems design and implementation efforts.
  • Collaborates within the DCB IT Systems team and work units in the planning, design, development, and deployment of Freezerworks workflows and enhancements as well as monitors existing functionality.
  • Creates and/or maintains necessary formal system documentation including User Requirement Specifications, Detailed Design Specifications, Configuration Test Plans and Summary Reports.
  • Collaborates with DCB IT Project Manager to create standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and training materials to support the use of the Freezerworks application and provides training to DCB staff.
  • Provides technical assistance for end-users specific to Freezerworks and other assigned applications.
  • Responds to user inquiries concerning assigned applications and helps troubleshoot system and operator problems; investigates and resolves system issues, assists in correcting user errors.
  • Develops tools and mechanisms within Freezerworks to import and export data from Excel, CSV, or text files.
  • Develops Freezerworks web interface and API functionality to expand Freezerworks capabilities and interfaces with other databases.
  • Expands Freezerworks usage to other DCB laboratories and groups.
  • Coordinates and performs in-depth tests, including end-user reviews, for modified and new processes. Develops, standardizes, and maintains new or improved processes based on findings and analysis.
  • Perform duties listed above for other applications as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Information technology experience working with and implementing software applications; Experience with the Freezerworks application, working with laboratory/technical or quality assurance staff required to meet regulatory requirements (e.g., CAP/CLIA, FDA), a plus.
  • Prior experience with document and/or quality management software and using or supporting laboratory related applications a plus. Some background working in regulated environments and/or clinical laboratories preferred. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills with the ability to meet project milestones on time.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to work with a wide variety of personnel of varied technical knowledge.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team to meet organizational goals.
  • Experience providing training to staff, creating SOPs, and documentation management.
  • Advanced skills with system device management and monitoring.

Physical Capabilities 

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • The individual must be able to stand/sit for extended periods at a computer terminal performing repetitive administrative processes travel to and move within the Program's research sites.

Qualifications

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting. 

Education and Experience

  • Vocational or technical training or Associate's degree required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience required.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Vendor training/certification preferred (e.g., MCSE) but not required.
