ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION :

The Department of Transportation (MCDOT) plans and implements activities which prevent and correct problems that contribute to the physical decline of county right-of-way infrastructure; ensures fair and equitable services to residents and traveling public throughout the County; and maintains existing infrastructure to ensure a safe transportation network.

ABOUT THE JOB:

MCDOT seeks a Transportation Systems (Overhead) Technician I to join its technician team . This position will be based within the Division Traffic Engineering and Operations .

This entry-level transportation systems technician position focuses on constructing, modifying, and maintaining traffic signal devices and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices as part of the County's Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS). Future non-competitive promotion opportunities are available.

M CDOT is responsible for the County’s arterial transportation network with over 300 critical miles of roadways. Operating from its Transportation Management Center (TMC), which includes traffic and transit real-time operations, MCDOT monitors and controls 1,000 traffic signal devices, 250 traffic surveillance cameras, and many Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices through its Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS).

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

The position will perform various work in the field at traffic signals constructing, modifying, installing, and maintaining transportation systems equipment. Duties involve working from a bucket truck and are of a physical nature. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Installing overhead traffic signal heads, signs, and electrical cables.
  • Determine causes of and repair problems with overhead equipment.
  • Install and troubleshoot overhead communication cables.
  • Re-lamp traffic signal heads.
  • Replace damaged pedestrian pedestals and other equipment.
  • Install video and other detector technologies overhead at traffic signals.
  • Work on 12 to 120 volts AC circuits and 24 volts DC/logic circuits.
  • Set up work zone safety traffic control standards inside a construction area or incident sites.
  • Set up and program variable message signs.
  • Work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, near electricity, construction, incident sites, and under stress while working on traffic signal equipment.
  • Work within rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, standby, and holidays.

WHO WE ARE SEEKING:

  • The ideal candidate possesses a valid Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Basic electrical or electronic foundation or construction techniques are essential for learning about traffic signal technologies.
  • A detail-oriented problem-solver who can create innovative solutions, has good interpersonal and communication skills and basic computer skills.
  • Able to prioritize, organize, and multi-task to meet deadlines and simultaneously follow through with multiple projects. The selected candidate must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team or in group settings to meet established goals.
  • Communicate clearly and distinctively with a diverse population and over a two-way radio system.
  • Work rotating shifts on weekdays, weekends, holidays, and standby.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Commercial Driver’s License from the applicant’s state of residence and the ability to drive a county vehicle to respond to malfunctioning traffic signal equipment and to perform traffic signal maintenance and repair field work including visiting construction projects to perform field inspections.
  • Position will be considered an Essential Employee and overtime work will be required. Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency or liberal leave.
  • To ensure a positive workplace and to comply with Federal, State and County laws, the incumbent is responsible for completing mandatory trainings within the first three to six months or within the specified timeframe.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience: One (1) year of experience involving electrical wiring and intersection set up of traffic signal control devices and related equipment.
Education: Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland supplemented by completion of either formal school or on-the job training in electrical wiring appropriate to traffic signal control devices.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
License : Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) from the applicant’s state of residence. Note: There is no substitution for this section.Preferred Criteria

All applicants will be reviewed by OHR for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated "Qualified," placed on the Eligible List, and may be considered for interview. Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following :

1. Bucket truck experience
2. Basic electrical foundation or construction techniques.
3. Experience using computers, computer applications, and the internet.

Employees meeting minimum qualifications who are same grade or higher will be placed on Eligible List as a "Transfer" candidate and may be considered for interview.
