Montgomery County Government is Hiring a Transportation Systems Technician I/II/III (Installation, Maintenance, and Repair), Grade 14/18/20 Near Rockville, MD

This position may be underfilled at the Transportation Systems Technician I level, Grade 14; or at the Transportation Systems Technician II level, Grade 18. There is a non-competitive promotional possible through training and experience opportunity to a Transportation Systems Technician III, Grade 20.

ABOUT THE JOB:

MCDOT seeks several Transportation Systems Technician I to join its technician team.

This position will be based within the Division of Transportation Engineering and Operations (DTEO), under the Transportation Management Section.

This entry-level transportation systems technician position focuses on constructing, modifying, and maintaining traffic signal devices and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices as part of the County's Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS).

MCDOT is responsible for the County’s arterial transportation network with over 300 critical miles of roadways. Operating from its Transportation Management Center (TMC), which includes traffic and transit real-time operations, MCDOT monitors and controls 1,000 traffic signal devices, 250 traffic surveillance cameras, and many Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) devices through its Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS).

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

The person in this position will perform various work in the field at traffic signals and construction sites.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Install, modify, test, and troubleshoot traffic signal control equipment in the field and sometimes from extended heights in a bucket truck.
  • Set up and configure various traffic control cabinets, special equipment interface, unique phasing, overlaps, pre-emption, and special clearances.
  • The equipment includes traffic signals, school flasher assemblies, variable message signs, lane control, transit signal priority, vehicle, bike, pedestrian sensors, and fiber optic signs.
  • Install, test, and repair communication wiring and equipment, including audio, video, and data transmission equipment.
  • The equipment includes traffic surveillance cameras, broadband DSL networks, traveler advisory radio, ITS, and ATMS equipment.
  • Work on 12 to 120 volts AC circuits and 24 volts DC/logic circuits.
  • Work on fiber optic cable installation, splicing, handling, testing, and interface equipment.
  • Set up work zone safety traffic control standards inside a construction area or incident sites.
  • Work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, near electricity, construction, incident sites, and under stress while working on traffic signal equipment.
  • Work within rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, standby, and holidays.

WHO WE ARE SEEKING:

The ideal candidate has a basic electrical or electronic foundation which is essential as a base for learning about traffic signal technologies.

The person is a detail-oriented problem-solver who can create innovative solutions. Good interpersonal, communication and computer skills are desired, especially with Microsoft Office applications.

The person in this position will prioritize, organize, and multi-task to meet deadlines and simultaneously follow through with multiple projects. The selected candidate must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team or in group settings to meet established goals. Speaking clearly and distinctively with a diverse population and over a two-way radio is essential.

The candidate must be able to work rotating shifts on weekdays, weekends, holidays, and standby.

Experience in one or more of the following relevant knowledge and ability areas is desirable:

  • A basic electrical or electronic foundation or experience.
  • The ability to interpret schematics and utilize test instruments, such as a voltmeter.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position REQUIRES the possession of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license and the ability to drive a county vehicle to construction projects for prep work before signal activation and field inspections, respond to malfunctioning traffic signal equipment, perform maintenance and modifications, and activate new signal equipment. In addition, drive to special events to assist in traffic control setup.

The individual selected for this position will be considered an Essential Employee and overtime work will be required. Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency or liberal leave.

To ensure a positive workplace and to comply with federal, state and County laws, the incumbent is responsible for completing mandatory trainings within the first three to six months or within the specified timeframe.

Minimum Qualifications


If Filled at T
ransportationSystemsTechnicianI:

Experience: One (1) year of general experience in the area of electrical wiring or electronics.

Education: Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland supplemented by completion of course work which demonstrates a basic understanding of electronics.

If Filled at Transportation Systems Technician II:

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in the construction, modification, installation, testing, maintenance, and field and bench repair of electromechanical and electronic traffic control equipment.

Education: Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland supplemented by completion of course work which demonstrates a basic understanding of electronics.

If Filled at Transportation Systems Technician III:

Experience:Considerable (three (3) years) journey level experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of electronic/communications equipment and systems including: electromechanical and electronic traffic control equipment, fiber optic cable, data communication equipment, video and audio equipment.

Education: Possession of an Associate of Arts Degree from an accredited college or university in Electronics Technology or graduation from a two (2) year electronic/communications technical training school.

ALL LEVELS:

Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Physical Ability: Ability to independently move, pull or otherwise maneuver equipment and tools occasionally weighing up to one-hundred (100) pounds.

License: Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class “C” (or equivalent) driver’s license from the employee’s state of residence.
