Job Description:
Montgomery County is seeking an experienced IT Specialist (NOC) to support a 24x7x365 enterprise operations center. Staff will support a 24x7 FiberNet Network Operations Center (NOC) serving Montgomery County Government Departments and County Agencies including Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery College, Washington Suburban Sanitation Commission, Washington Metropolitan Park & Planning Commission and Housing Opportunities Commission.
Duties focus on the overall operation of the County’s FiberNet composed of over 600 miles of optical fiber, 1200 Cisco switch/routers, Aruba 802.11 Access Points and all supporting infrastructure. Other network topologies include Passive Optical Network (PON) sites and Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) sites. The IT Specialist (NOC) will be responsible for monitoring network dashboards, analyzing problems, troubleshooting incidents, coordinating and reporting all operational information concerning the enterprise network infrastructure. The successful applicant will serve as an on-duty and on-call technical resource to resolve complex issues and support staff for network related issues.
There may be shifts where you will be the sole engineer and you must be able to calmly multi-task, apply critical thinking, and perform duties efficiently.
Scope of Work:
The primary work location will be 100 Maryland Ave. The FiberNet NOC operates on a 24x7 basis and NOC staff monitor the network on a three-shift schedule. Staff are expected to work any shift as assigned. To more fully develop relevant experience and technical skills, NOC staff may be expected to work periodically as field technicians. Such assignments will require staff to work a normal business day schedule. The County will provide all materials and equipment necessary to perform assigned duties.
Staff must be capable of responding to network faults and supporting service provisioning & delivery in FiberNet. It is expected that the IT Specialist (NOC) can perform their roles in the office or field as necessary.

Minimum QualificationsEducation : Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited college or university, or certifications in specific programming languages or operating systems may be required.
Equivalency : An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. For applicants possessing very hard-to-find skills which are a critical need to the department/agency, training and certification may be accepted in lieu of full degree requirements.
Experience :
IT Specialist 1 – One (1) year professional experience in the information technology field in areas such as programming, systems analysis, computer operations, data control and preparation, and data/telecommunications, depending on the duties of the position.
IT Specialist 2 – Two (2) years of professional experience in the information technology field in such areas as programming, systems analysis, and data/telecommunications, depending on the duties of the position.
IT Specialist 3 - Three (3) years of professional experience in the information technology field in such areas as programming, systems analysis, and data/telecommunications, depending on the duties of the position.
Physical Abilities: Ability to lift boxes containing computer support items and equipment such as printers, computers, modems, and monitors weighing up to 50 pounds.Preferred Criteria
There is no Preferred Criteria. All applicants will be reviewed by OHR for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated Qualified, placed on the Eligible List, and may be considered for an interview.
