Montgomery County Government is Hiring an Information Technology Specialist I; Grade N20 Near Rockville, MD

The Office of the County Council is seeking an entry level Information Technology Specialist to perform IT systems work. This person will work with other information technology specialists, technicians, department end users at all levels, vendors and individuals outside the County government.

About the position:

The primary focus of this position is the technical support of staff members within the Legislative branch of the Montgomery County Government. This includes six offices with less than 200 staff members including elected officials. You will serve as the first tier of support providing analysis, research, and resolution to technical issues with hardware, software, and networking. You are responsible for providing support on site as well as remotely and will support staff that are onsite and working remotely. This position also assists with technical onboarding of new staff.

The nature of the position requires someone to be professional, customer oriented and adept at working with demanding customers.

A few of the things you will be doing:

  • Providing front line technical support for all technical user requests through email, phone, and in person.
  • Following up with employees to ensure resolution is satisfactory.
  • Troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing computer hardware, printers and tablets, mobile phones. (Windows 10, iOS and Android).
  • Responding to basic IT requests such as password resets, peripheral configurations, desktop/laptop/iOS/Android configurations.
  • Installing enterprise and departmentally sourced software and patch computers off the domain.
  • Providing in depth technical support; diagnosing and resolving problems ranging from tier 1-3 type issues.
  • Assisting with onboarding and training new staff.
  • Assisting in management of asset inventory.
  • Providing training to staff planning to use technology in any of the Council chambers.
  • Supporting common enterprise software solutions including Microsoft Office 365 and Adobe suite.
  • Providing basic technical training to new and existing staff.
  • Identifying reoccurring and/or advanced issues and submitting advanced issues to appropriate team members and offices for resolution.
  • Providing technical support to VIP staff members.
  • Providing backup support for engineers when they are on leave or otherwise unavailable.
  • Testing software, hardware and other business processes in support of non-technical staff.
  • Troubleshooting mobile device and wireless connectivity issues
  • Assisting with the development and presentation of training sessions.
  • Ensuring computers in the Council chambers are current, online and available for use before all Council sessions.

We are looking for someone with:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge and support of SCCM, Microsoft Exchange online, Office 365, and SharePoint Online.
  • Knowledge of computer and network security systems, applications, procedures, and techniques.
  • Ability to install, configure and maintain computes, network and related hardware and software.
  • Knowledge of AD account management, group policies, DHCP, DNS as well as patch management.
  • Ability to manage several high-priority, fast paced activities within required timelines without sacrificing quality.
  • Ability to identify and resolve computer system malfunctions and operational problems.
  • Strong customer service skills

This position requires strong customer service and communication skills as well as the ability to work independently and be self-motivated. In addition, the selected candidate must have the ability to prioritize work assignments as well be able to balance the demanding needs of staff. Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited college or university, or certifications in specific programming languages or operating systems may be required, depending on the duties of the position.

Experience: One (1) year professional experience in the information technology field in areas such as systems analysis, and/or computer operations.

Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. For applicants possessing very hard-to-find skills which are a critical need to the department/agency, training and certification may be accepted in lieu of full degree requirements.

Preferred Criteria

There are no preferred criteria for this position. All applicants will be reviewed by OHR for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated "Qualified," placed on the Eligible List, and may be considered for interview. Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:

  • Experience with Office 365, Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint.
  • Experience support and troubleshooting Windows 10 and/or Apple iOS desktop.
  • Experience using Remote Connectivity Tools, VPN (Pulse Secure), SCCM, and hosting with teleconferencing software (Zoom and Teams).
  • Experience managing tickets in a Ticketing System (ServiceNow).
  • Experience with account management using MS Active Directory.
