The Bowery Mission is Hiring a Chief Financial Officer Near New York, NY

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a vital strategic partner to the President & CEO, providing leadership, management, and vision to ensure The Bowery Mission (TBM) continuously develops a financial infrastructure and processes needed for optimal performance among 155 employees and across 7 campuses. The CFO serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team of officers, which is responsible for the overall strategy and direction, financial viability, operational structure, and execution of the board-approved plans of TBM.

In this role the CFO will oversee the Finance & Accounting team and ensure the highest standards of financial management to guide how the company manages growth, revenue, expenses, and cash flow to achieve its goals. The CFO will advise on all fiscal matters, providing leadership to guide the organization’s financial activities including annual and long-term planning/forecasting, accounting, budgeting, risk management, compliance, and evaluation. In partnership with the executive team and other leaders of the organization, the CFO will ensure the finance and accounting functions are aligned on best practices, will provide consultative support on all planning activities, and will address financial challenges as they arise.

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Responsibilities:

 Organizational Leadership & Strategy

  • Work closely with the Executive Team to develop and drive the execution of the organization's strategic goals and objectives by ensuring that the financial and operating structure supports the needs of its programs
  • Advise the executive leadership team (CEO, Chief Development Officer, Chief Human Resources Officer, Chief Operations Officer, and Chief Program Officer) on the organization’s financial performance and long-term financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, investments, and policy matters.
  • Advise executive leadership team on control measures and build consensus with internal and external stakeholders regarding strategies that contribute to more efficient allocation of resources. Provide reliable cash flow projections, reporting mechanisms, and “what if” scenarios operating in due diligence.
  • Report financial information and trends to the Board and manage relationships with the Board’s Finance and Audit committees.
  • Support and champion Diversity Action Council and Culture Champion initiatives to foster a healthy organizational culture.

Financial Management

  • Responsible for all finance and accounting functions, including day-to-day financial reporting, working capital/cash management, financial controls, and risk management
  • Lead financial management activities and an integrated accounting and financial management system including auditable financial reporting and internal controls. Oversee accurate allocation of costs among budget accounts. Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and principles, financial information, and system functional standards.
  • Develop and/or oversee the implementation of programs and processes that ensure robust monitoring of financial transactions and budget execution to achieve compliance with applicable laws and regulations as well as internal and external policy. Adopt adequate measures to address anomalies and eliminate/mitigate risk of future non-compliance.
  • Develop dynamic financial and business planning models, along with performance metrics that drive the development of monthly and quarterly reports and the annual budgeting process.
  • Ensure effective and compliant business operations, where risk is evaluated and mitigated on an ongoing basis.
  • Partner with the CEO and Finance Committee of the Board to deploy investment capital in the most effective manner to achieve the organization’s long-term strategic initiatives.

  • Communicate a vision and strategy for the finance and accounting team, as well as the team and personal goals to drive successful execution of that vision and strategy.
  • Manage and mentor the team to achieve ambitious results and create a high standard of accountability.
  • Support team members’ learning, development, and career growth.
  • Build a team culture of optimism, excellence, transparency, and adaptability in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Continually evaluate the structure of the finance team to optimize for efficiency and effectiveness and to support the organization’s growth.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field required, MBA and/or CPA preferred, non-profit financial planning and/or accounting experience preferred
  • Eight to ten years of progressive financial management experience
  • Embrace the organization’s Statement of Faith

  • Strong strategic and reasoning skills, including financial planning, forecasting, modeling and data analysis
  • Excellent management and supervisory skills
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of business and fiscal administration
  • Experience in the oversight and review of financial transactions

Salary commensurate with relevant education & experience: $175,000 - $185,000
