Primary purpose:

The Environmental Permitting Specialist will assist in obtaining and maintaining environmental permits and approvals for a wide range of projects. This role offers an opportunity to work with a dynamic team and gain hands-on experience within the energy industry.

Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Assist with coordination of environmental permitting for the successful design and construction of processing facilities, pipelines, terminals, and associated infrastructure.
  • Engage externally with third-party environmental consultants and regulatory agencies regarding permitting and compliance-related activities, including monitoring and reporting requirements.
  • Implement regulatory compliance programs and management practices.
  • Perform interdisciplinary coordination amongst internal stakeholders (engineering, land, legal, corporate affairs, etc.) to inform critical permitting details, understand constructability concerns and needs and how permit constraints can affect construction, and provide pertinent updates during project meetings. 
  • Communicate project and permitting specifics with the appropriate regulatory officials, as directed.
  • Assist in the review of contractor provided materials for agency submittals. 
  • Collaborate with a variety of people with tact, courtesy, and professionalism. 
  • Maintain regular, dependable attendance and a high level of performance.
  • Maintain a high regard for personal safety, the safety of company assets and employees, and the general public.
  • Other daily, weekly, monthly, or special projects may be assigned.

Minimum requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering or related degrees. Other degrees will be considered if combined with experience in environmental permitting and compliance in the oil and gas industry.

Experience/Specific Knowledge:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in environmental permitting and compliance with demonstrable increase in responsibility and independence
  • Experience with federal agencies (e.g. BLM, NPS, USACE, USFS, USFWS, BIA, FERC), their regulations, and the resources they manage.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations (e.g. CWA, ESA, NHPA, MBTA, NPDES, and NEPA). 
  • Firm understanding of NPDES permitting, reporting and compliance for construction and operational activities. 
  • Familiarity with ASTM Phase I (and II) due diligence assessment activities.
  • Experience in the development of and providing project environmental training to contractors.
  • Familiarity with working within an independent project team structure with other groups and roles, such as land and engineering, is mandatory.

Certifications, Licenses & Registrations:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers (for travel).

Competencies, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to interpret and/or apply environmental requirements and translate regulatory regulations, permits, and plan requirements into compliance guidance.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to multitask while working under pressure to meet project deadlines simultaneously.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites (up to 50% travel possible at times).

The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions:

  • Will work non-traditional hours as needed.
  • May be required to carry a cell phone and be available to respond during working and non-working hours.
  • Candidates will be required to clear a drug screen and complete a background check, including a credit report for certain positions after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • None.

Preferred Education, Experience, Certifications, Competencies, Skills & Abilities:

Above the minimum requirements, not required but advantageous in this position: 

  • Experience with midstream/pipelines and major capital project development preferred.
  • Preferred experience in supporting construction compliance activities (Environmental Inspector management).
