Experience: 10 years or 5 years in Ship Design Management

Education: Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering from an accredited college or university*.

Description: Project Manager coordinates activities of ship design related to new building, conversion or repair projects to ensure that the goals and objectives of the project are accomplished within the prescribed time frame and funding parameters. Apply intense and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of technical responsibilities. The Project Manager will perform essential duties and responsibilities personally or through coordination with other managers, Project Engineers, designers, and drafters. Individuals shall have in-depth familiarity with all aspects of Ship Design spiral. Responsibilities as a minimum include engineering to develop ship preliminary design, functional design, detailed design, and integrating the work of structural, mechanical and electrical disciplines in compliance with ABS, DNV, Lloyds, BV and other applicable industry standards. Provide design and engineering services for government and commercial vessels ranging from utility boats to large oceangoing vessels. Types of vessel including but not limited to Research Vessels, Icebreakers, Naval Auxiliary Vessels, Offshore Support Vessels, Service Operation Vessels, Towing Vessels, Barges, River Vessels, and High-Speed Craft. Participate and contribute to design leadership and strategy discussions. Propose new approaches to problems encountered and make recommendations for changes in methods, procedures, and designs.

  • Monitor the technical quality, content, and consistency of action of all assigned projects. Review technical products and provide appropriate guidance and advice when necessary.
  • Adhere to all company safety, environmental, quality assurance and security programs.
  • Defines and creates project plans considering time frame, funding limitations, staffing requirements, regulations, resource availability and customer contractual requirements.
  • Serves as the single point of contact between customer and internal disciplines for all customer deliverables
  • Track day-to-day progress of projects with regard to budget, scope, requirements, and quality. Provide regular updates to the Executive Team
  • Manages development of project execution strategy including planning, vendor and subcontractor support requirements, contractual requirements,
  • Proactively identify risks and manage issues; create mitigation plans with project team and status reports
  • Coordinates staffing for each phase of the project; obtains approval and arranges for recruitment or assignment of project team members and consultants/contractors.
  • Confers with project staff to outline work plan and assign duties, responsibilities, and scope of authority; provides or facilitates technical advice and problem resolution support.
  • Coaches, mentors, motivates and directs project team members and contractors, and influences them to take positive action and accountability for their work to ensure project progresses on schedule and within prescribed budget.
  • Provides recommendations, with documented business case, on whether to perform work in-house or subcontract.
  • Ensures company performance against contractual commitments with customer and ensures customer satisfaction
  • Follows established processes for monitoring and integrating all project elements and communications concerning change management processes and decisions.
  • Reviews status reports prepared by project personnel and modifies schedules or plans as required.
  • Coordinates the operational aspects of ongoing projects and serves as liaison between project teams and other parts of the organization.
  • Uses financial reporting, trend and variance analyses and other performance measures to develop/modify project plans to mitigate risk.
  • Ensures all projects adhere to project methodology compliance standards set by the company.
  • Tracks project deliverables using appropriate tools and prepares project reports for management, customer, or others to ensure appropriate project cadence.
  • Evaluates project upon close-out and documents lessons learned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Understanding of ship and/or offshore structure design practices line of business for both Government and Commercial clients.
  • Understanding of project management methodologies, tools and techniques.
  • Proficient computer skills including the ability to use Microsoft products such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of ship design software programs.
  • Proven project management track record driving projects to 100% completion, on schedule and to stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Assists in writing proposals for new business development
  • Ability to communicate technical/complex information to non-technical people both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship skills to effectively interact with customers.
  • Strong leadership qualities including diplomacy and ability to interface with cross-functional teams within and outside of the organization.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification Preferred
