SOUTH SIDE MISSION is Hiring a Lifeguard - Summer Camp (Seasonal) Near Canton, IL

Position Description:

As a Lifeguard at South Side Mission Camp Kearney, you will play a crucial role in providing a safe and enjoyable waterfront program that aligns with the camp's goals and objectives. Embracing the mission of South Side Mission Camp Kearney, you will communicate and enforce guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of campers and staff during waterfront activities, participate in camp devotionals, assist with programs, and maintain cleanliness in the pool and lake area.

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent experience.

Bona Fide Occupational Qualifications:

Must be of Christian faith.

Key Responsibilities:

Safety and Supervision:

  • Assume leadership for the supervision and direction of camp’s waterfront areas and programs.
  • Enforce camp policies and procedures to ensure a safe and orderly waterfront environment.
  • Prioritize the safety of staff and campers, adhering to established safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Coordinate and implement program components according to the daily schedule, promoting a smooth and timely waterfront experience.

Weekly Responsibilities:

  • Provide constant watch and supervision of campers and staff using the pool or lake, ensuring their safety and adherence to rules.
  • Execute emergency procedures swiftly and effectively in the event of a water-related incident.
  • Follow pool and lake operational procedures according to camp policy, maintaining consistency and adherence to safety standards.
  • Perform daily cleaning tasks in changing areas, deck, equipment, Boat House, and pool area, maintaining cleanliness and orderliness.
  • Conduct daily swimming and canoe instruction classes if qualified, contributing to camper skill development and water safety awareness.
  • Enforce safety rules and techniques, assisting in camper discipline as needed.
  • Assist in testing and classifying the swimming abilities of staff and campers at the beginning of each session, ensuring appropriate supervision levels.
  • Maintain swimming pool, including upkeep of maintenance records to ensure proper functioning and safety.
  • Attend weekly in-service training for all lifeguard-certified staff members, enhancing skills and knowledge in water safety and rescue techniques.
  • Lead campfire devotions if required by the Program Director and/or Camp Director, fostering spiritual growth and community bonding.
  • Assist with registration, check-in, and check-out procedures as directed by the Camp Director.
  • Assist with evening cabin supervision as assigned.

General:

  • Attend and actively participate in all camp programs and spiritual activities, contributing to the overall camp community.
  • Maintain personal grooming and cleanliness standards, setting a positive example for campers and colleagues.
  • Assist with camp clean-up at the end of each session and the conclusion of the summer, promoting teamwork and responsibility.
  • Prepare and deliver the Lifeguard camp brief at the end of the summer.
  • Support other camp duties as needed and assigned, demonstrating a willingness to contribute to the success of the camp community.

Skill Development Opportunities:

  • Leadership: Lead waterfront activities with confidence and authority, demonstrating leadership in enforcing safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Decision Making: Make split-second decisions in emergency situations, demonstrating quick and decisive action to ensure the safety of campers and staff.
  • Critical Thinking: Assess risks and anticipate potential hazards in the waterfront environment, implementing preventive measures to mitigate risks and promote safety.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Communicate effectively with campers, staff, and camp leadership, conveying instructions, enforcing rules, and providing assistance with clarity and professionalism.
  • Teamwork: Collaborate with other staff and camp leadership to maintain a cohesive and supportive camp community, working together to address challenges and achieve common goals.
  • Problem Solving: Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and address safety concerns promptly and effectively, demonstrating resourcefulness and adaptability in resolving issues.

Qualifications:

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate (or equivalent).
  • Current First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification.

Physical and Other Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects and reach overhead.
  • Ability to operate telephone.
  • Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to access and produce information from a computer.
  • Ability to understand written information.
