Position Description:

Provide leadership in Camp Kearney kitchen and dining hall, ensuring the provision of nutritious and delicious meals that contribute to the overall camp experience. Oversee menu planning, food preparation, cooking, kitchen organization, inventory management, and staff supervision. Support the teaching of campers about Jesus Christ through culinary skills and service.

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent experience

Bonafide Occupational Qualifications:

Must be of Christian Faith.

Tasks:

Safety and Supervision:

  • Assume responsibility for the supervision and direction of kitchen and dining room staff, providing leadership and guidance in accordance with camp policies and procedures.
  • Enforce camp policies and procedures to maintain a safe and hygienic environment for staff and campers.
  • Prioritize the safety and well-being of staff and campers, adhering to established safety protocols and standards.
  • Coordinate and implement all program components relative to the daily schedule in a timely and organized manner, ensuring efficient meal service and kitchen operations.

Weekly Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Camp Director to develop a diverse and balanced menu that accommodates dietary needs and preferences. Consider factors such as age groups, cultural considerations, and special dietary requirements.
  • Prepare meals according to the planned menu, ensuring high-quality presentation, taste, and nutritional value. Adhere to food handling and sanitation guidelines to maintain a safe cooking environment.
  • Utilize culinary expertise to cook a variety of meals, adapting recipes as needed to accommodate batch cooking for large groups.
  • Accommodate special dietary needs or restrictions, ensuring alternative options are available and clearly labeled.
  • Maintain inventory of food supplies and kitchen equipment, monitoring stock levels and placing orders as needed to prevent shortages.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of the kitchen, storage areas, and cooking utensils. Adhere to sanitation guidelines for a clean and safe working environment.
  • Work closely with camp staff to coordinate meal schedules and address dietary concerns. Gather feedback on meal preferences and adjust as needed.
  • Educate campers and staff about healthy eating habits, nutrition, and food safety. Promote balanced diets and encourage campers to try new foods.

General:

  • Attend and actively participate in all camp programs and spiritual activities, contributing to the overall camp community.
  • Maintain personal grooming and cleanliness standards, setting a positive example for campers and colleagues.
  • Assist with camp clean-up at the end of each session and the conclusion of the summer, promoting teamwork and responsibility.
  • Prepare and deliver the Camp Cook camp brief at the end of the summer.
  • Support other camp duties as needed and assigned, demonstrating a willingness to contribute to the success of the camp community.

Qualifications:

  • Active Food Handlers card for Illinois.
  • Proven experience as a cook, preferably in a camp or similar setting.
  • Ability to manage a high-volume kitchen and efficiently plan and prepare meals for large groups.
  • Familiarity with dietary restrictions, food allergies, and special dietary needs.
  • Strong organizational skills, including inventory management and record-keeping.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with campers, staff, and team members.
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation guidelines.
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible in a camp environment with limited resources.

Physical and Other Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects and reach overhead.
  • Ability to operate telephone and desktop or laptop computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to access and produce information from a computer.
  • Ability to understand written information.
