Health and Wellness Specialist - Summer Camp (Seasonal)

Position Description:

As a Health and Wellness Specialist at South Side Mission Camp Kearney, you will play a critical role in ensuring the physical and emotional well-being of campers and staff throughout the summer. Reporting directly to the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director, you will oversee the health center, administer medications, provide basic first aid, and offer support and encouragement to those in need. Embracing the Christian values and mission of South Side Mission Camp Kearney, you will serve as a compassionate and competent leader, contributing to a safe and nurturing camp environment where campers can grow spiritually, emotionally, and physically. This is a seasonal summer position and requires spending overnights at camp for the weeks it is in session.

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent experience.

Bonafide Occupational Qualifications:

Must be of Christian faith.

Key Responsibilities:

Safety and Supervision:

  • Enforce camp health and safety policies to maintain a secure and orderly health center environment.
  • Prioritize the safety and well-being of campers and staff, remaining vigilant to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Coordinate with camp leadership to implement health-related protocols and procedures effectively.

Weekly Responsibilities:

  • Dispense medications to campers and staff according to prescribed schedules, ensuring accurate record-keeping and adherence to medication protocols.
  • Provide basic first aid and medical care as needed, assessing injuries and illnesses, and determining appropriate treatment.
  • Assist with camper check-in and health screenings upon arrival, documenting any pre-existing medical conditions or special needs.
  • Collaborate with camp counselors and activity leaders to support campers with medical needs during program activities and outings.
  • Conduct regular health checks and follow-up assessments for campers and staff, addressing any concerns or issues promptly.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date health logs, including medication administration records, incident reports, and camper health assessments.
  • With coordination and approval from the Camp Director, communicate effectively with parents regarding camper health issues, medication management, and any incidents or concerns that arise.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions to stay informed about camp policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.

General:

  • Assist with other camp duties and routines as needed, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to contribute to the overall success of the camp community.
  • Serve as a positive role model for campers and staff, embodying the values of compassion, integrity, and service.
  • Attend and actively participate in camp programs, spiritual activities, and staff devotions, fostering a supportive Christian community.
  • Take advantage of skill development opportunities offered at camp, including leadership training, decision-making exercises, and team-building activities.
  • Prepare and deliver the Summer Camp Health Specialist camp brief at the end of the summer.
  • Maintain a clean and organized health center environment, ensuring that medical supplies and equipment are readily available and properly stored.

Skill Development Opportunities:

  • Leadership: Take on leadership responsibilities within the health center, overseeing medication administration, first aid care, and health record-keeping.
  • Decision Making: Make informed decisions regarding camper and staff health, assessing medical needs and determining appropriate courses of action.
  • Critical Thinking: Evaluate health-related situations and emergencies, responding quickly and effectively to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Communicate compassionately and effectively with campers, parents, and staff, building trust and rapport in challenging situations.
  • Teamwork: Collaborate with fellow staff members to provide comprehensive support and care for campers and staff, fostering a cohesive and supportive camp community.
  • Problem Solving: Address medical issues and emergencies with creativity and resourcefulness, finding solutions to ensure the best possible outcomes for all involved.

Qualifications:

  • Current First Aid, CPR, and AED training and certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in handling medical information and situations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a genuine desire to support and encourage campers and staff.

Physical and Other Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects and reach overhead.
  • Ability to operate telephone and desktop or laptop computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to access and produce information from a computer.
  • Ability to understand written information.
