Position Description

Serco is seeking a highly skilled Senior Database Administrator with expertise in both Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle 19c environment to join our dynamic IT team in Herndon, VA - (Hybrid Schedule). As a pivotal member of a compact, yet highly efficient team, your role will involve supporting mission-critical databases on a robust, highly available system, playing a pivotal role in ensuring the availability, performance, and security of our diverse database infrastructure both on-premise and Microsoft Azure Cloud environment in RedHat Linux and Windows Server.

This position requires flexible working hours to accommodate operation support schedules and could require work on weekends and/or off hours. 

In this role you will:

• Database Design and Implementation: Work collaboratively with development teams to devise and implement effective, scalable database solutions for both SQL Server and Oracle databases.
• Installation, Configuration, and Monitoring: Handle the installation, configuration, and maintenance of critical database environments, guaranteeing optimal performance and security.
• Establish robust monitoring systems to detect issues proactively and respond promptly.
• Security and Access Control: Implement and enforce security policies and access controls, utilizing encryption and data masking techniques to protect sensitive data.
• Proactive Monitoring and Issue Resolution: Set up proactive monitoring systems for early issue detection and respond to alerts with thorough root cause analysis.
• Dedicate efforts to maintaining high availability within the database environment.
• Patch Management and Security Compliance: Keep the database infrastructure up-to-date with the latest patches and updates, strictly adhering to security policies.
• SQL and PL/SQL Programming: Utilize strong SQL, T-SQL, and PL/SQL programming skills for databases, contributing to the support and optimization of stored procedures, triggers, and functions.
• Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, offering technical expertise and support for both SQL Server and Oracle databases.
• Maintain flexibility and openness to learning and adapting to newer database environments as organizational needs evolve.
• Communication: Communicate clearly and effectively with stakeholders regarding database-related matters, fostering transparency, and understanding through verbal and written documentation.
• Beyond Oracle and MS SQL Server: Possess familiarity with the administration of MySQL or willingness to learn other new database products would be considered an additional asset.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role you will have:

• Bachelor's degree in engineering preferably in Information Management or Computer Science
  • Or a High School Diploma with 9 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree
• Minimum 5 years of experience as an Oracle and MS SQL Server Database Administrator
  • Must have prior working experience in both MS SQL Server in Windows and Oracle Databases in Linux environment 
• Good hands-on experience with MS SQL Server Version 2019 onwards and Oracle Database 19c onwards
• Experience with Oracle Database Architecture, Oracle Database Upgrade, Database migration, and Data cloning methods
• Experience designing, installing, upgrading, patching, tuning, monitoring, and troubleshooting databases with large amounts of data (Terabytes)
• Immediate participation in an active on call rotation required
• Candidate must be capable of providing off hours support to avoid impacting database availability during normal business hours

Additional desired experience and skills:

• Oracle and/or MS professional certification
