Job Description
Job Title: Accounting Manager
Department: Accounting Department
Reports To: Assistant Vice President - Finance and Accounting
FLSA Status: Exempt
SUMMARY:
The Accounting Manager is a valued member of the organization and is responsible for the
daily operations of the Accounting Department including complete, accurate, and timely
completion of financial and accounting records and reporting in accordance with
generally accepted accounting practices and Credit Union policies. The position
establishes programs to support, mentor and develop employees.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES include the following. Other duties may
be assigned.
Manages the daily operations of the Accounting Department which includes accounts
payable, wire transfers, fixed assets, share draft clearings and all general ledger and
bank reconciliations. Ensures the accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end
close for all companies.
Prepares and maintains all accounting records including but not limited to general ledger
entries for bank accounts, investments, fixed assets, payroll, mortgages and
subsidiaries.
Prepares routine and ad hoc reports as required.
Prepares and posts accruals including but not limited to payroll, property taxes, interest,
dividends and miscellaneous expenses.
Maintains an understanding and competency with respect to software and other systems
required to perform the duties of the position including but not limited to Great Plains,
SAP Concur, Monarch Jack Henry Epsys and Microsoft Office Suite Products.
Oversee and coordinate activities with independent audit firm and internal audit to
ensure accurate information is provided on time for year-end audit.
Assists other departments in problem resolution as it relates to the general ledger,
financial statements, and financial impact on Federal Credit Union.
Research, analyze, and document complex accounting issues to reduce exposure.
Recommends, designs, and implements department controls, procedures, efficiencies
and process improvements as needed.
Maintains a working knowledge of accounting principles, standards, regulations, laws
and practices.
Assist in preparation of the business plan for the accounting department.
Manage and develop staff to ensure a smooth and improved operation of the department
to include but not limited to hiring, directing, evaluating and developing staff. Directs
employee training to improve efficiency and ensure conformance with standard
procedures and practices.
Fosters a positive culture throughout the organization. Promotes respect and
harmonious relations among accounting staff and with departments throughout the
organization.
Ensures positive relationships with the branches, internal departments and external
partners. Maintains a positive and caring atmosphere for members and employees
consistent with the Credit Union's mission and philosophy.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises designated staff in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable
laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning,
assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining
employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university and minimum three years
related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of formal education and
experience. One year of prior management experience required.
OTHER KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of computer equipment and software required including Microsoft
Office Suite. An understanding of state and federal laws.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and
correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before customers or employees of
organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions,
proportions, and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of
instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
