POSITION SUMMARY 

The Engineering Manager plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the convention center's infrastructure and amenities. This position is responsible for overseeing a team of specialized engineers and project management staff to undertake large-scale maintenance and capital projects within the facility. This role does not oversee the routine and preventative maintenance activities but is a key partner with the maintenance department to ensure the projects commissioned are integrated into the preventative maintenance plan.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Oversees the planning, execution, and completion of large-scale maintenance and capital projects, ensuring they are on time and within budget. Collaborates with project management staff to develop and manage project plans.
  • Communicates with team members, both technical specialists and project staff, to ensure that everyone is aligned with project goals and objectives.
  • Builds and leads cross-functional teams, fostering collaboration and trust among engineers, project staff, and contractors, while addressing conflicts to promote a positive work environment.
  • Budgets for and invests in training programs for engineering staff to enhance their skills and capabilities, enabling them to address technical challenges efficiently.
  • Conducts thorough cost-benefit analyses for potential engineering projects impacts to operations and client satisfaction in a high occupancy facility.
  • Adapts to changing project requirements, technological advancements, and unexpected challenges in a dynamic environment while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and learning within the team.
  • Delegates tasks and responsibilities to team members while providing the necessary support and resources, empowering them to take ownership of their work and make decisions within their domains.
  • Prepares periodic reports summarizing progress of construction/project activities for higher-level management and clients.
  • Builds and manages relationships with suppliers and contractors, exercise negotiation skills, and implement cost control strategies while monitoring project progress and adhering to regulatory compliance for resource management.
  • Manages the department's annual budget, allocating resources effectively to meet operational needs and engineering projects.
  • Implements energy-efficient practices to reduce utility costs, such as optimizing lighting and HVAC systems during and around event activity.
  • Ensures all engineering activities comply with relevant safety, health, environmental, and regulatory standards. Maintains accurate records and documentation.
  • Develops a well-defined scope of work for third-party contractors which describes the services, deliverables, and technical requirements.
  • Works with the Procurement Department during the solicitation process to conduct site walks and interviews, manage technical requests for information (RFIs), and evaluate bid proposals and solicitation submittals as needed.
  • Performs assessment of proposals and qualifications received from third-party vendors to determine the best value to meet internal company needs. May propose alternate means and methods for cost saving or value creation opportunities where possible.
  • Coordinates change order management, creation, and negotiation to determine reasonableness and verify cost estimates.
  • Interprets as-built drawings and updates facility drawings accordingly.
  • Develops and implements emergency response plans for engineering-related issues and participate in emergency response efforts as necessary.
  • Stays updated on industry best practices and emerging technologies to make informed decisions on infrastructure upgrades and improvements.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

The Engineering Manager supervises specialized engineers and project management staff, overseeing their performance and development. They allocate resources, resolve conflicts, and monitor project progress while maintaining budget compliance and regulatory standards. Additionally, they manage external contractors, communicate with various stakeholders, and play a crucial role in strategic planning and emergency response within the department.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or business, an accredited college or university
  • At least eight (8) experience in engineering and project management, with at least five (5) years of managerial experience.
  • Proficiency in project management software and computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Leadership Skills: Strong leadership and management skills to guide technical specialists and project management staff effectively.
  • Project Management: Proficiency in project management methodologies, tools, administration, and software.
  • Cost Management: Expertise in budget management, cost estimation, and cost control to ensure projects are executed within budget.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with team members, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Technical Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of engineering principles and practices, including an understanding of the specific engineering disciplines relevant to the convention center's operations.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Strong language skills, enabling clear communication with technical specialists and non-technical stakeholders. Effective written and verbal communication, negotiation, and presentation abilities are essential, along with the capacity to interpret and convey technical and regulatory requirements.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Possess a solid foundation in mathematics, including financial math for budgeting and cost estimation, statistical analysis for risk assessment, algebra for problem-solving, and geometry for spatial planning. These math skills are necessary for data-driven decision-making, project scheduling, and ensuring projects stay within budget. Additionally, the Engineer Manager should have expertise in engineering calculations specific to the assigned engineering disciplines, enabling effective technical oversight of the team and project requirements.

REASONING ABILITY

Strong reasoning abilities, encompassing critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills to make informed decisions, address technical challenges, assess project performance, and strategize for long-term goals.

CERTIFICATES OR LICENSES

No certificates or licenses are required; however, any of the following are preferred:

  • California Professional Engineer (PE) License.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM).
  • LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job there will be several physical demands, although they are generally less strenuous compared to hands-on engineering positions. The Engineering Manager will need mobility to move within office spaces, engineering and maintenance shops, utility rooms, and project sites, involving tasks like walking, standing, and stair-climbing. Good visual acuity is essential for reviewing technical documents, engineering drawings, and safety standards. Fine motor skills and dexterity will be necessary for tasks involving plans and drawings, equipment calibration, and documentation requiring precision. The Engineering Manager should possess sensory abilities to interpret verbal communications and alarms. While lifting and carrying tasks are not primary responsibilities, occasional handling of lightweight equipment or project materials may be required in this leadership and oversight role.
