Job Description
Join the dynamic human resources team at Roanoke College! We are seeking a Senior Director of Human Resources to lead our institution in fostering a supportive, diverse, and equitable workplace environment. If you are passionate about helping individuals, driving organizational change, and championing progressive HR practices within the realm of higher education, we invite you to apply for this pivotal role. This is an exempt, full-time, 12 month position with full college benefits that include generous paid time off, tuition remission, and 12 weeks of paid parental leave. The Senior Director is directly responsible for the overall administration, coordination and evaluation of the human resource function for Roanoke College and is a key member of the College's leadership team.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Review and recommend improvement of the organization's policies, procedures and practices for personnel matters and develop HR strategies aligned with the College's strategic plan.
  • Manage annual budgets and strategic plans for the human resource and benefits departments.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to employees and management on HR-related issues and concerns.
  • Handle employee grievances, investigations, and disciplinary actions in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Oversee recruiting activities and implement effective onboarding programs to integrate new hires into the organization, promoting DEI efforts.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation and ensures compliance through policy audits, training, and communication.
  • Implement and optimize HR systems and processes to streamline workflows and improve efficiency.
  • Lead compensation and benefits reviews and policy implementation, analyzing needs and trends. Consults with the Council of Independent Colleges of Virginia (CICV) and the Virginia Private Colleges Benefits Consortium (VPCBC) as needed.
  • Supervise a staff of three in the human resource department and ensure they remain up to date on legal issues, best practices, and College strategy.
  • Participate on multiple committees and special projects that affect faculty and staff.
  • Responsible for the completion of surveys for the college's liability insurance and multiple salary and benefits surveys (CUPA, AAUP, IPEDS, etc.).
  • Manage work authorization compliance by working with legal counsel to obtain work Visas such as Optional Practical Training (OPT) and H1-Bs.
  • Serves as Deputy Title IX Coordinator for the College.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree and 7-10 years related experience; Master's degree preferred
  • SPHR or SHRM-SCP certification is preferred
  • Proven experience in a senior HR leadership role, preferably in higher education.
  • In-depth knowledge of HR best practices, employment laws, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate business objectives into HR initiatives.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products as well as HRIS platforms and other relevant technologies such as applicant tracking and compensation analysis.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.
  • Behave ethically and maintain strict confidentiality of personnel and College information.
