Summary:

The Ortho/Neuro Medical CNA is an individual who assists with routine care of patients ranging from infancy to geriatric and the maintenance of the unit under the direction of the professional nurse.

E xperience/Education Requirements:

  • Completion of certified nurse aid course.

License or Certification Requirements:

  • CNA certificate registered with the State of Illinois.
  • CPR certification required

Responsibilities:

  • Ability to follow and maintain isolation procedures, especially chemo precautions.
  • Ability to place and maintain CPM's on patients.
  • Ability to reinforce total joint precautions.
  • Ability to turn patients from side to side, transferring, and therapeutically and ambulating safely.
  • Administers enemas.
  • Answer call lights in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Assist patients with all aspects of ADL's and reinforce patient's exercises.
  • Complete intershift reporting.
  • Document chartable activities in computer.
  • Feed patients and give them between meal fluids and nourishments.
  • Pass meal trays and fresh water.
  • Keeps patients' bedside and overhead tables clean and within reach of patients.
  • Makes sure nametags are above each patient bed and wristbands are on each patient.
  • Obtain and record patient weights: standing, bedscale, and wheelchair
  • Provide skin care.
  • Reports changes in patients' condition to the professional nurse.
  • Restock supplies in patients' rooms. Label all patient's utensils with a sticky label and their name.
  • Take temperatures, pulse, respirations, B/P's, and measure and document I & O's.
  • Use of OmnicellUtilize safety restraints and assistive devices appropriately.

Hearing: Necessary to hear alarms, calls for help and to hear patient verbalizations.
Touch: Contact with patients, need to distinguish between hot and cold.

Lifting of patients off their beds that are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Horizontal movement of patients to and from carts/beds who are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Lifting equipment - carry 25-150'- waist high (IV bags, patient trays). Carry charts 25-150' waist high. Filled laundry bags are filled half full so as not to weigh over 35 lbs. Carry fire extinguishers down 1/2 flight of stairs or up 3-4 flights of stairs and several yards in an emergency.
