Job Title: Janitorial and Maintenance Assistant
Reports to: Assistant Director, Animal Care & Facilities
Direct Reports: None
Key Work Partners: Executive and Management Staff; all locations
Job Summary
The Facilities Assistant supports PAWS Chicago buildings and vehicles. This position combines responsibilities related to facilities management, maintenance, and janitorial duties to ensure a well-maintained and clean environment. The Facilities Assistant partners with the facilities team to see to a well-organized and welcoming environment for both staff and visitors while focusing on safety and compliance with regulatory standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
General Facilities Maintenance:
• Oversee day-to-day performance of heating, air conditioning, water, gas, and electrical systems.
• Ensure proper functioning and certification of fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers.
• Undertake general maintenance projects based on the changing business and operational needs of PAWS Chicago.
• Unload pallets from incoming deliveries.
Building Maintenance:
• Maintain the physical condition of buildings, including lighting, windows, doors & locks, roof, awnings, and any other necessary components.
• Monitor and manage parking lot cleanliness and exterior lighting.
• Support the Assistant Director, Animal Care and Facilities in ensuring PAWS Chicago buildings comply with federal, state and local codes and regulations.
Janitorial and Cleaning:
• Perform janitorial duties as needed for the building.
• Collaborate with your facilities team to accomplish various tasks, including but not limited to, moving items, clearing spaces, and general cleaning.
• Assist the Animal Care Manager on days when tours occur at our facilities, ensuring that PAWS Chicago buildings are clean and ready.
Basement Monitoring and Pest Control:
• Monitor the basement, ensuring cleanliness.
• Working with support of our pest control company to reduce or eliminate pests within our facilities – this includes, checking for open containers, identifying pest entry points, and cleaning any droppings.
Daily and Monthly Facilities Tasks:
• Facilities tasks as assigned.
• Assist with daily and monthly facilities tasks to ensure the overall functionality and cleanliness of PAWS Chicago facilities.

• High school graduate; trade school a plus
• Experience in construction
• Experience in Vendor Management / Implementation
• Self-starter, works independently
• Keep an organized work space
• Ability to lift and carry heavy bags of pet food, cleaning supplies, and other materials. This may involve lifting 50 pounds or more.
• Willingness and ability to bend, stoop, and kneel to clean kennels, reach low areas, and perform other cleaning tasks at floor level.
• Physical ability to move around the facility easily, including walking, standing, and climbing stairs.
• Capacity to perform repetitive cleaning tasks, including mopping, sweeping, and scrubbing surfaces. This may involve using cleaning chemicals and disinfectants.
• Ability to work for extended periods and handle a physically demanding workload.Requirements
