Newlands Law Group is Hiring a Remote Legal Assistant/Paralegal

Job Description: Newlands Law Group seeks a legal assistant/paralegal eager to grow, learn, and take on responsibility. We are a small, elite personal injury firm committed to innovation, excellence, and client satisfaction. Because we’re small, you have the opportunity to participate in varied cases and activities, create and nurture relationships with clients, and collaborate with the lawyers in evaluating potential cases and driving outcomes.

You will be handling cases in both pre-litigation and litigation, though your primary responsibilities will be in litigation cases up to and including trials. You will need to be highly organized, able to prioritize among many, many tasks, and you must be an excellent communicator (both within your team and with our clients, opposing lawyers, and court personnel).

Your responsibilities will also include helping clients (and us) gather materials we need to evaluate and ultimately win their cases, such as relevant documents, medical records, photos, insurance information, names and contact information for witnesses, etc. You will have frequent communication with our clients as part of your role. Our clients are all either seriously injured or have had a loved one die. If relating to people like that doesn’t sound like something you want to do (it’s not for everyone), you can stop reading here. This isn’t the job for you.

You’ll also be responsible for working with third parties to gather additional information to help us evaluate the client’s case, including making public records requests, direct-to-provider medical records requests, third-party document and multimedia requests, etc. You will be responsible for following up on all these varied requests and making sure we receive the materials we need. Finally, you will be responsible for saving all the information we receive in our system and making sure our electronic file system remains complete, organized, and updated. These responsibilities are the foundation of all the work we do. Information is power. The more we have, the better results we can get for the clients who trust us with their cases.

Over time, this position provides room for growth and flexibility. You’ll be allowed to take on new and different responsibilities if you show aptitude. As you transition into additional responsibility, your compensation structure and future opportunities to change as well.

We’re looking for somebody who likes to take on new challenges and will go the extra mile to find the best way to make something happen. We’re looking for somebody who wants to grow in the legal field and be a part of our team long-term. We’re looking for somebody who has an eye for detail (from reviewing medical records to catching our typos in legal documents). We’re looking for somebody proficient in Word, and at least able and willing to learn Adobe Acrobat and Excel. We also want somebody who is an expert at internet and social media stalking. Seriously.

So that’s what we want. Here’s what we don’t want. We don’t want somebody who just blindly follows instructions. We don’t want somebody who is satisfied doing things because “that’s the way we’ve always done it.” We don’t want somebody who is satisfied by doing the bare minimum. And we don’t want somebody that’s going to be afraid to offer ideas or suggestions. The timid need not apply. But if you’ve read this far and think you can add value to our firm, send us your resume and a cover letter. In your cover letter, please explain what makes you a good fit in this position, where you see yourself in five years, and please put a random number 1 in your cover letter somewhere that appears to the uninitiated to be a typo (so we know you actually read all of this). We look forward to meeting you and talking about how you fit in with what we’re doing.

A final note about the work – our work is high-pressure. We are not. But we rely on our legal assistants and paralegals for some of the most important responsibilities in our law firm. And it is very important to us that the work is done with excellence. But we also take very seriously our obligation to reward excellence. The successful applicant for this position will be treated as though their work is the backbone of what this law firm does. Because it is. To demonstrate that, we offer unprecedented flexibility, autonomy, and opportunity if you excel at what you do. We’re in no hurry to hire; but will hire very quickly once we find the right person.

Compensation: This position starts at $15.00 per hour during a 90-day probation period. After your first 90 days, we either part ways or we bump you to a salaried position plus an annual bonus. Benefits are available after 90 days.
