Mothers Outreach Network, Inc is Hiring a Paralegal Near Washington, DC

ABOUT MOTHER’S OUTREACH NETWORK

Mother’s Outreach Network, Inc., (MON) based in Washington DC, is a non-profit, tax-exempt, racial justice and antipoverty advocacy organization that pursues the inclusion and empowerment of Black mothers in the struggle for family preservation by transforming government income and child welfare laws, policies, and practices from punitive to empowering. MON uses movement-lawyering strategies that will build parents’ power to transform systems and that will aid in harm reduction against impacted constituents. MON does so through three primary programs:

  • The legal program, which provides representation, advice, and referrals for mothers who are facing adverse administrative decisions, with a focus on matters before the DC Child and Family Services Agency, that negatively impact family preservation and economic security;
  • The advocacy program, which seeks to transform income and child welfare/family regulation system policy at the local and federal level; and
  • The community engagement program, which includes outreach events, know-your-rights workshops in law and civic activism, as well as community-driven research and mutual-aid.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This is a full time position with a salary range of $55,000-60,000 depending on experience. The Paralegal will report to the Managing Attorney. The Paralegal will work side-by-side with attorneys and legal volunteers and will complete supporting tasks associated with court cases and other legal duties. Note: This position is hybrid/remote with office days required as needed.

JOB DUTIES

The position requires effective multitasking skills to properly organize and handle tasks for a variety of legal staff and legal volunteers including those enumerated below:

  • Conducting client initial screening and intake interviews
  • Preparing, delivering, monitoring, and completing client forms and documents, including retainer agreements and client initial screening and intake forms into the CLIO case management system
  • Drafting legal documents, including but not limited to retainer agreements for client matters
  • Preparing and filing documents with courts or tribunals
  • Investigating facts for client matters
  • Organizing and archiving documents related to completed and ongoing cases for client matters
  • Assists in gathering records from CFSA and in investigations on behalf of MON attorneys before CFSA
  • Participating in events with prospective clients, including the public library-based weekly tax clinic

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree (in any field) from an accredited college or university
  • Post‐Baccalaureate paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved paralegal education program is desirable but not required
  • Paralegal certification from NALA or the Federation of Paralegal Associations is desirable but not required

EXPERIENCE

Must have a minimum of two years of experience as a paralegal or providing legal support services
