Expertise
To provide for excellent and consistent public service and access to the public, I am responsible for ensuring material evaluation and maintenance of accompanying inventory records occurs routinely and accurately. I ensure Patron Claims are efficiently processed and patron accounts are updated. I maintain the organization and maintenance of the Library of Things. I coordinate and respond to requests for interlibrary loan materials from the MCPL collection and place requests for MCPL patrons with other Libraries. I play a lead role in the Library’s weeding program and coordinate the deselection of items from the collection. I conduct these and other collection maintenance activities as needed and directed by my manager.
Essential Functions, Responsibilities, Knowledge and Skills
- I evaluate materials and update item and patron records including previously lost items, damaged items, missing parts and repairs.
- I ensure claims are processed and searches of collections are conducted as well as conduct patron record maintenance for those items.
- I maintain all Library of Things collections including organization, item cleanup, reporting and interaction with vendor databases, and record maintenance.
- I am a point person with other Access and Content staff to ensure weeding is conducted on a regular and timely basis and ensure reports and tools to conduct weeding are available to staff for the purposes of pulling items from the shelves.
- I perform clerical assistance for projects and daily routines, including data entry and creating reports to assist in conducting tasks.
- I occasionally act on behalf of the Lead Material Handlers and in their absence.
- I work in OCLC (or other systems) to find materials not owned and needed by MCPL patrons. I also fulfill requests for material owned by MCPL needed by other Libraries.
- I provide directional assistance to Library patrons.
- I assist with inventory activities as directed by my manager.
- I may assist with routine tasks, undertake special projects, and participate in teams or groups as directed by my manager.
- I have the ability to participate and assist in the implementation of process improvement and evaluation initiatives.

Required Education/Experience and License/Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience with materials inventory/distribution systems strongly preferred.
- Previous library experience helpful.
- Fluency in a second language is considered helpful in this position.
- May require verification of valid driver's license and proof of insurability should assignment(s) include regular travel.
Supervision Received
Receives occasional direct supervision. Work is assigned and performed with some functional guidance following established procedures. Works independently and as a team. Has some latitude in setting work flow and performance routines. Unusual questions and situations are referred to the supervisor or manager, frequently with additional information and/or suggestions.

Working Conditions
- Frequently standing, walking, moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, and moving from one work site to another.
- Regular bending at the waist and at the knees associated with materials transfers and shelving.
- Frequent moderate (25 lbs.) and heavy (up to 50 lbs.) lifting. Assistance with excessive loads is required.
- Regular pushing/pulling of fully loaded book carts (filled carts may weigh over 100 lbs.).
- Regular reaching/stretching between floor level and six feet (bookshelves).
- Work has standard vision requirements; frequent speaking, vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Occasional sitting and performing various repetitive actions and extensive use of keyboards, mice monitors, and varied digital devices, requires using hands to finger, handling or feeling and repetitive motions.
- Normal library working conditions; moderate exposure to office/maintenance chemicals (cleaning solutions, glue, paint, etc.).
- Occasional exposure to fluctuations in interior conditions such as noise and temperatures.
- May encounter exposure to outside elements, heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, etc. when traveling on library business.
- Infrequent climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms.

MCPL work schedules adjust in response to changing operational needs.
- Applicants must be available for weekday, weekend, and evening shifts.
- Up to 18 hours per week may be scheduled based on Library operational needs.
- This position may be assigned to any library location.
- MCPL remains open during local academic breaks and we are unable to accommodate extended absences, including those associated with semester breaks.
