Mobile Care Chicago is Hiring a Medical Director Near Chicago, IL

About the Organization

Currently in its 24th year of service, Mobile Care Chicago is a non-profit organization which operates mobile medical clinics. These mobile clinics travel into underserved, often disinvested communities in order to provide no-cost diagnosis, medical care, and education to children, young adults and, in some programs, the adult population. Through three mobile clinic programs (Mobile Medical, Asthma/Allergy, and Comprehensive Dental), Mobile Care currently provides health care to over 800 patients each month.

The Medical Director position will lead MCC’s three Asthma Vans, working collaboratively to ensure all providers and support staff are well-trained to provide culturally appropriate allergy and asthma care. This position also works directly with the Executive Director and the senior staff to develop and implement programs that enhance clinical care, such as home environment assessments, environmental justice work, and community-based education.

About the Job

The Medical Director supervises all mobile clinic operations and staff, provision of direct patient care, family education sessions, and communication with external stakeholders aboard MCC’s Asthma Vans.

This position focuses on pediatric asthma care, so pediatric experience is required; specialized training in respiratory care and asthma management is a strong plus. Two Asthma Vans travel throughout Cook County, and one Asthma Van is stationed in Lake County. The vast majority of areas where clinics serve patients are not easily accessible via public transit, so a reliable car is required for this job.

Asthma Van clinics primarily operate 8 hours per day Monday through Friday. There are occasional evening meetings and/or weekend hours required for community or fundraising events, especially during summer months. MCC’s Asthma Vans also provide immunizations and physical exams for school children who lack other medical access points.

Goals of the Position

  • Ensure patients, parents/guardians, site representatives, and other community members have an excellent, empowering experience when interfacing with all MCC programs and program staff
  • Ensure coverage for clinical hours during MCC’s hours of operation
  • Support the professional development of staff: regularly charting measurable benchmarks for staff performance, empowering staff to pursue their strengths and passions within a justice framework, and holding staff accountable to achievable personal goals
  • Manifest the Pillars of Service (Competence, Compassion, and Collaboration) thoughtfully in MCC’s Strategic Planning and expansion of services
  • Ensure transparent, frequently updated reports on Program Goals, outputs, and outcomes, to be shared with staff, Board members, and other stakeholders
  • Maintain the resiliency of MCC’s clinics through readiness exercises, competencies, and protocols, and assure standardization across mobile units

To accomplish these goals, this position focuses on specific functions:

Staff Development

  • Ensure necessary staffing, especially the hiring, training, and regular evaluation of program staff
  • Oversee professional development for MCC’s medical providers, including the expansion of their clinical knowledge
  • Draft and approve protocols to ensure alignment with guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic conditions
  • Encourage and advance creative, critical thinking within program staff
  • Make sure organizational and programmatic goals are well-known, and that staff are well-trained to achieve the stated goals

Clinical Duties

  • Ensure detailed patient history
  • Perform physical examination related to lung health
  • Provide detailed, individualized patient and family asthma education sessions
  • Instruct patients and families on medication and spacer utilization
  • Interpret spirometry results
  • Diagnose and treat co-morbid illnesses
  • Provide school-mandated immunizations and physicals
  • Interpret allergy skin tests
  • Respond to emergencies
  • Maintain CPR and other certifications/competencies
  • Other duties as needed

Strategic and Vision Leadership

  • Support an inclusive vision of community health where all people can share ideas and participate in the work of community empowerment
  • Build and sustain relationships with people and organizations that advance the organization's vision
  • Represent MCC at events, forums, and in other spaces where MCC can lend meaningful perspective
  • Participate in senior staff and Board-level activities and conversations on MCC's strategies, goals and activities, including reports and presentations as requested

Position Requirements

  • Board certified or board eligible in Pediatrics and/or Family Medicine
  • Unrestricted medical license in the State of Illinois
  • Minimum of five years pediatric primary care or asthma/allergy experience
  • Cultural sensitivity and compassion
  • Understanding of comprehensive care
  • Ability to meet parents where they are at, and coach them into good health habits
  • Desire to reverse systemic inequities that lead to higher asthma prevalence rates and lower access to medical care in disinvested communities
  • Reliable transportation
  • Above all, a passion for bettering the lives of low-income children

Strongly Preferred Qualities

  • Proficiency in Spanish
  • Direct knowledge of asthma
  • Prior experience leading a team
  • Native of Chicago, or long-time resident of Chicago
  • Experience with research or clinical trials
  • Strong communication background

Compensation

This position offers generous paid vacation, health, dental, and vision insurance, CME coverage, liability insurance coverage, a collaborative and encouraging work environment, and the ability to positively impact the lives of children in Chicago’s most underserved neighborhoods.
