Company Culture
Missouri Pipe Fittings, LLC (MoPipe). is a closely held manufacturer and distributor of pipe fittings and nipples located in St. Louis MO. Until very recently, the company was owned by a family who had controlled the business for the last 25 years. A private equity firm recently invested in Missouri Pipe and, in partnership with the current owners, plans to expand the current sales effort and eventually the current customer base and end markets. The company has just over 30 employees and has the feel of a small business. The culture will be evolving from that of a comfortable lifestyle business to a FRIENDLY culture of customer focus, accountability, trust, and high performance. The private equity firm seeks to help all of its employees achieve their personal, professional, and financial goals. As a member of the leadership team at the company, the controller will play a key role in helping to establish this new growth-oriented culture.

Position Description
The controller at MoPipe maximizes the return on the company’s assets by establishing financial policies, procedures, controls, accounting systems, and related reports. The controller is responsible for all accounting functions including budgeting, cash management, financial reporting, cost management, AR/AP and related analysis. The controller supports the leadership team with key financial information and operational analytics. He/she works closely with operations and interacts effectively with all parts of the company to develop a culture of customer focus, accountability, trust, and high performance

Critical Outcomes

  • Evolve current accounting practices to monthly reporting in accordance with GAAP
  • Ensure the company’s current technology stack is adequate to support the growth objectives of the business
  • Maintain days sales outstanding at 45 or less
  • Complete monthly financial statements within 15 days of the end of month
  • Calculate Initial Rate of Return on non-maintenance CAPEX items
  • Offer at least one continuous improvement idea per month
  • Maintain zero workplace accidents in department
  • Maintain stable costs

Supervisory Responsibilities

None, though a part time payables & receivables clerk may be hired in the future

Key Responsibilities

  • Processes and controls: The controller will maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures. He/she will implement, document, and maintain adequate and effective internal controls over accounting transactions to safeguard financial assets of the organization, ensure sufficient cash flow, reduce operating costs, increase revenues, and improve profitability.
  • Cash Management: The controller will supervise all cash management activities. He/she will oversee the company’s transaction processing systems. These duties will ensure that:
  • Budgeting: The controller will manage the capital request and annual budgeting / forecasting process.
  • Financial reporting and analysis: The controller is responsible for the issuance of timely, accurate, and complete monthly and year-end financial statements. Financial information is reported to the leadership team and Board of Directors. The controller position supports the leadership team with key financial information and operational analytics.
  • Purchasing: The controller will oversee all purchasing activities. He/she will audit MoPipe's current purchasing process and help to develop a purchasing strategy. The controller will oversee buying the best quality equipment, goods and services for MoPipe at the most competitive prices. The controller will ensure adequate material stock levels are established to meet our production needs. He/she will be in a position to make a meaningful difference in cost saving and profit by overseeing research to ascertain the best products and suppliers in terms of value, delivery schedules and quality. The controller will build and maintain good relationships with all suppliers.
  • Lender relations: The controller will maintain lines of communication with all lenders. He/she will monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants. He/she will ensure all reporting requirements are complied with including BBC and loan covenant calculations.
  • Insurance: The controller oversees the business insurance plans to ensure appropriate insurance coverage is in place at all times. He/she will be involved in health care coverage analysis.
  • Payroll / Employee Benefits: The controller oversees payroll activity including preparation of weekly payroll. He/she will also participate in the employee benefit plan decision making process with emphasis on maximizing a cost-effective benefits package.
  • Audits: The controller will coordinate and be the key contact for all external audits. He/she will ensure that company records are organized and readily available for examination. The controller will maintain relationships with external auditors and review their findings and respond accordingly.
  • Legal: The controller is responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Plant operation financial support: The controller will support the operations team as a partner on a day to day and long term basis.

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) or equivalent; or 5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and legal documents. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of MoPipe. Must be able to read and write in English

Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to calculate figures and amounts. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra. Ability to analyze financial information

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: While this position generally operates in an office environment, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes of airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and extreme heat or cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet, but occasionally moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
