POSITION SUMMARY:
The Retention Specialist I is responsible for the re-recruitment of previously enrolled MACU students who have left the university prior to graduating from their chosen program of study. The primary focus for the Retention Specialist I will be students who have been exited from the University longer than one calendar year. The position serves as a liaison between the student and all necessary University Departments for the purposes of student readmission. This position reports to the Director of Student Services.
STANDARD DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Actively recruits previous MACU students for the purpose of reentry with a focus on those absent from the University for more than one calendar year.
  • Allocates and spends a substantial amount of time communicating with and contacting prospective students daily.
  • Conducts daily activities to ensure department retention and reentry goals are met.
  • Serves as a liaison between the student and the University throughout the retention process.
  • Coordinates with all University Departments as necessary to accomplish retention efforts.
  • Counsels and advises students regarding University policies.
  • Reaffirms student expectations and advises on best practices for success.
  • Advises and assists students in identifying long-term goals, motivations, and career plans.
  • Advises students regarding their academic progress and guides them to meet graduation requirements in a timely fashion.
  • Gathers all retention documentation for academic, admissions, and financial clearance to attend the University.
  • Follows MACU’s policies and procedures in working with students while maintaining the confidentiality of educational records in accordance with FERPA regulations.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of MACU’s financial and academic policies.
  • Provides general information and resources about financial aid requirements, standing, processes, documents, and alternative funding options.
  • Coordinates the preparation of Payment Arrangements as necessary to ensure candidates have an assurance of funding.
  • Participates annually in the University’s commencement ceremony and may be asked to represent the department at other university-sponsored events.
  • Performs University exit interviews for students who leave MACU.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Skills: Ability to interact comfortably and appropriately with students, staff and alumni; excellent customer service skills including positive phone demeanor; comfortable with spending a significant portion of the day on the phone; strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills required; preferred experience with motivational interviewing and sales.
Abilities: Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously; willingness to adapt to changes in policy and procedure; exemplary time management skills; excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to defuse confrontational situations; ability to work independently with minimal instruction, and must demonstrate initiative and flexibility.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor degree from an accredited university or a minimum of five years of either professional experience in a college, university, or professional office environment.
Preferred experience in customer service, sales, counseling, or leadership.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Keyboarding skills along with reasonable proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel and Word.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires repetitive motions and sitting at computer keyboard; hearing and speaking on the telephone; able to conduct business at other offices on campus; able to lift, bend, grasp, reach, and lift up to 20 lbs. occasionally.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Office environment requiring business casual.
