Job Overview
We are looking for an experienced and visionary leader to join MassCEC as our Chief Operating Officer (COO). MassCEC is at the forefront of driving climatetech and clean energy innovation in Massachusetts, and we are seeking an individual with a proven track record in people and operational leadership with demonstrated experience scaling the systems, structures, and culture of a growing organization for long-term operational and programmatic excellence. The COO reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and is a key member of the Leadership Team.
The COO advances the MassCEC's mission to establish Massachusetts as the global leader in climatetech through strong leadership and execution, serving as an exemplary model of the organizational culture. The COO is responsible for the organization's daily internal operational management, while creating an environment that supports career growth and promotes inclusion and belonging, in close collaboration with the Leadership Team. The COO serves as a representative for the CEO on all internal operational matters, underlining the significance of their role in achieving the organization’s mission, maintaining cohesion and alignment within the organization. Also, the COO works closely with the Chief of Staff to foster a collaborative environment and timely and effective communication across the organization and the development of organizational goals.
The COO manages critical operational functions essential to a strong underlying infrastructure that supports a dynamic and growing program portfolio and team. This will comprise Human Resources (HR), Information Technology (IT), Strategic Asset Management, Production Tracking System (PTS), and Business Analytics functions at MassCEC initially and may include additional areas of responsibility over time. Our HR team, lead by a Director, serves as integral partner in maintaining a strong organizational culture, including driving organization-wide communications, onboarding new employees, training, and development, enhancing our staff's job satisfaction and overall programmatic impact. IT provides critical support infrastructure to our program teams and our finance function, requiring tight coordination and alignment in decision-making with the latter. Strategic Asset Management encompasses coordination of policy and resource requirements for MassCEC's three facilities, ensuring that leadership and staff usage needs of these facilities are delivered with high quality and attention to detail. These facilities include MassCEC’s downtown Boston office, the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal, and the Wind Technology Testing Center (WTTC) in Charlestown. The PTS function at MassCEC is supported by a team and run by a Senior Director. PTS tracks solar energy generation in Massachusetts, acting as a third-party validator for production credits. Business Analytics is new function run by a dedicated Director that addresses a growing need at MassCEC for meaningful and sophisticated metrics that will allow us to communicate the impact of our organization to multiple audiences working with the Marketing & Communications function and to evaluate program success.
The ideal candidate for this role will be a seasoned professional with a proven track record in managing and building operations and culture, ideally in both public and private sector contexts. They should bring expertise in mission-driven strategic planning and implementation, organizational design and development, program development and management, and possess strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. We are seeking an individual who can seamlessly blend systems thinking with hands-on operational management, contributing to the overall success and growth of our organization. If you are a results-oriented leader with a passion for addressing climate change through challenging and inspiring work, we invite you to explore this unique opportunity with MassCEC.
