POSITION TITLE:

Paraprofessional, Special Education

JOB CLASSIFICATION:

RESPONSIBLE FOR:

Helps to provide appropriate academic, behavior, social, emotional, and vocational learning opportunities for students with disabilities (SWDs) assigned to teacher caseloads. Helps to assess and document student progress.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Associate’s Degree through an accredited school OR

A minimum of 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours through an accredited school OR

A passing score on the Paraprofessional Assessment acceptable in Georgia

Experience:

Successful experience working with students who display characteristics associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or other developmental delays

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance and adheres to established work schedules.
  • Assists with classroom management and data collections, including collections for student information, student record, FTE, and other state database counts.
  • Assists teachers by providing one-on-one support for individual students as required.
  • Teaches (under direct supervision) or assists students in developing social/emotional skills, physical/occupational therapy skills, leisure and recreation, medication management, and other preventive behavior skills.
  • Prepares learning materials to meet individual learning styles, i.e., study guides, modified worksheets, taped reading assignments, etc.
  • Aids in the delivery of specialized assessment and instruction for students with disabilities (or at risk) and provides documentation of students’ progress on targeted goals and objectives.
  • Assists teachers by working on individual goals and objectives as determined by students’ IEPs.
  • Corrects class work and homework; documenting and reporting areas of strength and weakness.
  • Works collaboratively in co-teaching classrooms by reinforcing instruction, using behavioral supports and interventions, and implementing appropriate accommodations and modifications.
  • Assists in the supervision of students on field trips and other off-campus sites as needed.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of information regarding students and their program.
  • Serves on school committees, attends meetings, and assists with school functions such as Child Find, screenings, intakes, and assessments as requested by Director of Special Education.
  • Assists the staff in carrying out duties to provide additional academic services to students in the alternative educational setting who are considered significantly at risk.
  • Assists students with special needs. If assigned, assists with the basic needs of selected students (may include feeding, toileting, wiping noses, etc.).
  • Works collaboratively with school and agency counselors, teachers, administrators, parents, and related service providers in the overall educational plan for students to include lessons that address the student’s behavioral needs.
  • Submits all reports, forms, records, and data as requested by Alternative Education Director/Administrators.
  • Supports student development of employment plans.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Principal and/or the Director of Special Education.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently sitting and standing near students with disabilities. The employee may occasionally bend or twist at the neck and back while performing the duties of this job. The employee may occasionally lift up to 45 pounds and/or participate in a two person lift. Assist students in toileting (including catheter), positioning or to assist students with extreme behaviors. The employee may also be required to assist students in wheelchairs and to manipulate equipment such as standers, walkers, etc. Specific vision abilities include the ability to read typewritten material and computer screens.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with the public and other staff. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work out-put of students.
