About the Role

Reporting to and in partnership with the Executive Director, the Development Director creates and implements a strategic approach to fundraising. Fundraising opportunities will include grants, major gifts, grassroots donations, and occasional in-kind donations. 

Responsibilities

Strategy and Identification

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors and Executive Director to develop and execute LSM’s fundraising plan. Set and achieve goals, and secure financial support from individuals, foundations, and other institutions. Submit regular reports on progress toward goals to the Board and Executive Director.
  • Working with a highly engaged network, identify and cultivate new funders and identify opportunities to increase support from current funders. 
  • Work sensitively within the complex context of Catholic action on climate change

Cultivation, Solicitation, and Stewardship

  • Develop an understanding of funders’ interests and how LSM fulfills them and establish passionate relationships around LSM’s mission. Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with major donors.
  • Draft development plans and timelines; write/edit development materials such as grant applications and reports; write/edit regular updates to cultivate and steward existing and potential funders.
  • In collaboration with the Communications team, develop and execute a digital fundraising strategy. Write solicitation and thank-you emails and donation pages, develop and implement plans for major online giving events, and create related digital material.
  • Identify and implement new opportunities to expand LSM’s engagement with funders, such as the creation of special events, visits to compelling locations in our incredible global network, etc.

Internal Collaboration

  • Prepare Executive Director and other senior staff for interactions with potential and current funders.
  • Supervise a Development Coordinator, responsible for data entry and gift processing. Manage the implementation of the chosen development software.
  • Collaborate with programmatic leads to prepare funder materials and to shepherd funder relationships.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Finance to ensure grant applications and reports are completed in a timely way.
  • Maintain and improve existing development processes.
  • Manage the implementation of development software.

Required Qualifications

  • Passion for LSM’s mission.
  • A minimum of BS or MS degree in Social Work and Fundraising, Non-Profit Management, or similar. CFRE accreditation is a plus.
  • Minimum 5 - 10 years of development/fundraising experience.
  • Demonstrated record of success in meeting or exceeding fundraising goals with gifts in the range of 6 to 7 figures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies and techniques for institutional and individual funders.
  • Superior written and oral communication and presentation skills in English, including experience speaking to and writing for donors and crafting compelling funding proposals and pitch materials.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of the grantor landscape in the United States.
  • Willingness to travel to cultivate donor relationships as needed (current expectation is approximately one week per year).
  • Comfort working with a diverse global network, including demonstrated expertise in cultural diversity and ideally multilingual ability.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of donor databases.

Desired Qualifications

  • Existing network of contacts in the fields of environmental philanthropy or Catholic philanthropy.
  • History of growing funding.
  • Experience with raising funds for secondments or other collaborative funding arrangements.
  • Experience working within environmental or Catholic organizations. Understanding of and commitment to movement-building and grassroots organizing and climate and ecological justice.

While being Catholic is not required for this role, applicants should be comfortable with prayer and spirituality as part of the everyday experience of work. 

Location: This is a remote position located anywhere. Candidate must possess his/her computer and have reliable access to the Internet. The candidate must also be comfortable participating in meetings that occur during the day in Rome.

Salary: Competitive salary commensurate with experience.

Hours: 40 hours per week

Work environment: This position will work remotely.
