Job Title: Director of Business Development
Classification: Salary, Exempt, Full Time

Job Summary: The Director of Business Development plays a pivotal role in overseeing the strategic planning, optimization, coordination, and management of all transportation operations across the company while spearheading business development initiatives to drive growth and expansion opportunities . The primary responsibility of this position is to build and sustain a leadership an d culture that delivers business results efficiently and cost -effectively while delivering excellent stakeholder service. This role involves creating a high-performance work environment focused on leadership, coaching, development, communication, labor management, process improvement, and strategic planning, with a particular emphasis on fostering business development opportunities.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Oversee the scheduling , assignments, and daily workflow of subordinate staff in the department.
  • Recrui t, interview, hire, and train new staff .
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and support to transportation staff.
  • Handles the set of SMART goals.
  • H andles discipline of employees in accordance with company policies.
  • Collaborate with other departments and outside stakeholders to foster cross-functional teamwork that develops and deploys a vision to create a transportation service organization.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Identi fy opportunities for process improvement and implement best practices to enhance transportation efficiency.
  • Develop and implement logistics strategies to optimize transportation efficiency that includes both core business support and allowing for the spawning of a transportation “for hire” entity.
  • Ensures compliance with transportation regulations, especially those related to the transportation of hazardous materials.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of safety protocols and training programs in collaboration with the Transportation Safety Manager.
  • Manage and optimize the company’s fleet of vehicles, ensuring they are well-maintained and comply with safety standards through collaboration with the Fleet Manager and team.
  • Develop and manage transpor tation budget s to control costs while meeting delivery timelines and support third-party logistics (3PL) opportunities.
  • Lead and manage a team of transportation professionals, including transportation driver managers and dispatchers , that collaborate with Customer Service, Sales, and Plants.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to optimize the transportation department's efficiency and effectivenes s in collaboration with Analytics and drive towards a comprehensive data discipl ine .
  • Identify potential risks in transportation operations and implement strategies to mitigate them.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure seamless coordination between transportation, maintenance, customer service, and analytics/contracts functions.
  • Work closely with the Data Analytics/Contracts Manager to analyze transportation data, identify trends, and optimize routes and contracts.
  • Monitor industry trends, regulations, and best practices to enhance the overall effectiveness of the transportation department. Stay updated on advancements in transportation technology.
  • Collaborate with the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor to ensure the timely maintenance and availability of vehicles for optimal deployment and retiring of assets.
  • Provide regular reports and updates to senior management on key transportation metrics and initiatives.
  • Oversee implementing and updating department procedures, processes, and policy changes.
  • Participate in union contract negotiations and address grievances in collaboration with driver management teams.
  • Support and execution of corporate policies and objectives .
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Proven leadership and managerial skills in the transportation industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of transportation regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Excellent organizational and strategic planning abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with i nternal teams, vendors, and regulatory authorities.
  • In-depth knowledge of transportation, fleet maintenance, and analytics , and vendor contract management.
  • Proficient in using transportation management systems (TMS) and route planning software.
  • Familiarity with the chemical manufacturing industry and processes is a plus.
  • Must be able to pass a 10-panel controlled substance testing and random testing after that.
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation check and maintain in good standing order, as per TSA’s TWIC criteria.
Travel Requirements
  • This position requires regular travel to company sites to oversee transportation operations, conduct site visits, and collaborate with team members at different locations .
  • A valid driver's license and reliable transportation are required .
Education And Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience with p roven track record of progressively responsible leadership roles.
  • Experience in the transportation industry is a plus.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

The Kuehne Company was founded in 1919 by the Kuehne family in Newark, New Jersey. In 1965 they built their first chlor-alkali plant in Elizabeth, New Jersey. In 1972, they moved their manufacturing facilities to Linden, New Jersey. Soon thereafter, they acquired Marzahl Chemical and moved their manufacturing and offices to South Kearny, NJ. In 1987, they formed a separate company called Kearny Barge Company, Inc., and started transporting bleach and caustic via barge. Kuehne acquired The Chloramone Corporation in 1989, and a year later shipped their first barge of sodium hypochlorite. Kuehne ...added another barge to their fleet in 1997 The CASOH to transport Castor Oil, and in 1998, Kuehne built its second chlor-alkali plant in Delaware City, Delaware. Kuehne continued to grow in 2000 by purchasing the chlorine and sodium hypochlorite business from Delta Chemical Corporation in Baltimore, Maryland. Kuehne commenced the manufacturing of their Strong Bleach in 2002, and in 2010, they announced the development of a new, state of the art, brine to bleach facility in South Kearny, New Jersey, which started up in April 2015.
