Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing is required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher-level nursing degree is required.
  • Master’s Degree (MSN, MBA, MSHA, MPH) is required.
  • Current RN licensure in the state of Arizona is required.

  • 5 – 7 years of increasingly responsible administrative nursing leadership experience. Surgical services and quality management experience preferred.

  • Current certification in Executive Nursing Practice (CENP) or Nurse Executive Advanced Certification (NEA-BC) is preferred.
  • Association of perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) membership preferred.

Essential Functions

  • Leadership: The CNO creates and communicates a compelling shared vision and develops effective strategies for addressing organizational priorities. He/she is responsible for building a practice environment which promotes clinical excellence, ensuring active staff participation and accountability through the principles of professional governance. The CNO assists the CEO in working to create an environment that inspires a strong work ethic and embraces change for the purpose of driving performance excellence. He/she creates an environment where learning, innovation and professional growth is expected. In the absence of the CEO, the CNO will reside as the acting administrator of the facility.
  • Operations Management: Ensures key operational systems can deliver desired outcomes including but not limited to staffing, scheduling, quality process improvement, hospital layout and design, and workflows. Leads through metrics, coaching, teaching and managing up. Establishes and monitors performance standards developing and implementing effective action plans when necessary to meet or exceed standards.
  • Rounding for Outcomes (MBWA – Manages By Walking Around): Personally influences the improvement of our collective results through a visible presence in assigned service areas, engaging with processes, monitoring performance and building relationships. Commits to a safe environment for patients/customers/guests. Ensures a personalized response to service concerns.
  • Human Resource Management: Facilitate staff development through ensuring effective selection, competency-based orientation & performance evaluation, mentoring and coaching. Maintains employee engagement rating above peer group norms or achieves consistent improvement for areas of responsibility. Ensures job descriptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis for those in a reporting relationship and updated as needed. In collaboration with HR, ensures a solid staffing pipeline/succession plan for both leadership & staff. Monitors key employee metrics such as retention rates, turnover, time to fill, etc. Maintains leadership visibility and assesses organizational outcomes by regularly participating in departmental rounds and attendance at departmental meetings.
  • Financial Stewardship: Ensures effective systems are in place to monitor controlled (direct) expenses according to budgeted level and seeks new growth opportunities that maximize value for the organization. Updates CEO on variances containing qualitative and quantitative analysis with action plans for the next financial period.
  • Resource Planning: Prepares budget for areas of responsibility to reflect an increase in value for the patient. Evaluates tasks and processes to identify opportunities for improvement in efficiency. Prioritizes capital needs of the organization based upon goals, technology required for patient care and makes recommendations to CEO. Ensures EMR adoption, technology is fully utilized and appropriate to the needs of caregivers and patients.
  • Customer/Patient Loyalty: Develops and communicates standards to support exceptional customer/patient experience and integrates into hiring standards and ongoing professional performance reviews. Through observation and feedback ensures standards are integrated into culture. Conducts review when standards are not met and promptly resolves concerns or complaints within assigned services and according to regulatory requirements. Uses learnings to continually improve level of service.
  • Quality Improvement, Culture of Safety and Compliance Management: The CNO utilizes the principles of High Reliability Organizations (HRO) to create a Culture of Safety environment supportive of continuous quality improvement, zero harm/harm reduction and non-punitive reporting. He/she ensures each department develops and measures key performance metrics in alignment with regulatory reporting requirements and professional standards including but not limited to AHRQ and nurse sensitive indicators such as NDNQI. Maintains ongoing compliance with licensure, regulatory, and accreditation standards applicable to assigned areas of responsibility. Ensures policies and procedures are regularly reviewed for being evidence based and in compliance with regulatory and contemporary professional standards.
  • Professional Practice: Regularly assesses level of professional practice against published standards and in collaboration with professional nursing staff. Ensures structure in place so that professional governance is functional and empowered to provide guidance and recommendations to areas of needed improvements. Provides opportunities to elevate professional knowledge and works toward continuously improving standards of care/service. Assumes leadership in developing a nursing and clinical shared leadership environment that creating collaboration and integration with other departments, fostering interdependence and cross functional teams. Partners with physicians to establish a safe environment for patients and smooth workflow.
  • Committee Support: Demonstrates personal leadership by working with CEO or appropriate co-workers to manage an improvement in the effectiveness of each assigned organizational committee or group meeting.
